Today was a busy day for the tank here at Chez Caveman. Last things first!

My goal today was to address the GHA in the tank. Over the past week it suddenly took off like crazy. It probably doubled in amount from a week ago. Bits of it were breaking off, clogging the overflow and messing with my ATO.

Here is the before picture

I manually pulled out at least a solid gallon of hair algae. Maybe more.

Then, under all of that was a layer of Bubble Algae. I tried to scrape most of that out too. I do not believe in Bubble Algae spreading if you disturb it. I think that is a myth. Perhaps it is true with the spores inside huge bubbles. Besides, it was already everywhere, what did I have to lose?

After a couple of hours, and razor scraping the glass too, it was pretty darn clean. Lights were down to just blues, but you can still actually see rock in this picture!

Everything in the tank is mad at me tonight. I finished things off with a water change and I am sure everyone will be fine and dandy soon enough.

After discussing my plan with a reef guru, I have decided I am going to go lights out for a few days this week. I want to give the snails and crabs some time to clean up the bits of algae that are left before letting it get immediately out of hand again. I have the RFAs coming in Thursday, so the plan is to go lights out for four days and then do another quick water change midweek.

This got long, so as far as the rest of the tank news today, be back soon :p

Okay, part two. Regular followers will know we have been expecting the clone BTA to split for some time. It has been all huge and twisty and keeps shimmying its position. Well, in today’s lesson of expect the unexpected, the ORIGINAL BTA split overnight.

Yes, I have three Bubble Tip Anemones in my 30 gallon display now. Luckily, I have already found a good home for her. I just need to wriggle her off the rock in the next couple of days and bottle her up.

How do you do that in a tank
On that rock I can bring it to the surface. All my rockwork is loose. Held in place by gravity.

EDIT: I could probably never risk having an urchin for this reason.
