I love torches, why don't they love me back?

Two torches, inches from each other. One looks good and the other has a foot in the grave. I just don't get it.

I tried an iodine dip on the one the other day but it has gotten worse. Any ideas?

Hmmm your parameters looks fine with the exception of mag being quite low, I keep mine at 1350-1450 and my torch is quite happy but I dont think that would cause them to die. What is the flow and what amount of light are they getting?

Lighting is around 150. Flow give them a gentle wave.

Usually darker color torches so okay with less par but I think the brighter color morphs do need more par like around 200-250+, also torches like moderate to high indirect flow so I would move it to a spot with more flow and par if possible and see how it does.

Not OP, but it’s virtually impossible to get those antibiotics now. Even my veterinarian won’t prescribe them for me.

My club was just talking about it at our last meeting - how we couldn’t find a source for it. I’ve been wanting more euphyllia but I’d been rationing my remaining antibiotics.

Crossing fingers for you! I find that when I type amoxicillin for fish into google I am able to find sites that are still openly selling them. Hopefully it stays that way!

As a general note, torches like higher than normal mag (around 1400), but, I don’t believe this is your problem here.

It’s beginning to surface more and more is that torches are prone to bacterial issues, where the bacteria that live within the torch (even vibrio, believe it or not), will thrive along with the torch for years, then a stress event happens, the torch goes into survival mode and starts ejecting its bacterial colony, and, as f one of the bacterial colonies are vibrio, the vibrio will turn around and say”forget you, I’m gonna survive this, and then kills the coral to survive.

The other thing you could have are tiny nematodes in the torch (they bury themselves at the base of the tentacles, and I’m not sure if they eat the torch to survive, it what you’ll notice is over time, the flesh band on the coral will begin to receede toward the head, then, if n time, the head will pop off the skeleton (polyp bailout to try and save itself).

The other thing is you may have something nipping at your torch. I used to spot feed my torches until my tangs realized that if they irritated the torches by pecking at their tentacles, the torch would kick out the digested food like a mucus, and apparently the tangs loved to eat that mucus. So I boradcast feed only now.

Honestly with how withered that coral is, I’m sorry to say I believe it’s a goner, but, here’s some things that have worked for me in the past:

If it’s nematodes (torch flesh is beginning to recede: 15 minute dip in prazipro followed directly by a 15 minute dip in potassium chloride, aggressively shaking the coral every 5 minutes. You may loose some tentacles, but you’ll be surprised with what you see come off the torch.

If it’s bacterial (tentacles are shriveled up for three days or more, but flesh band looks normal): cipro or oxilinic acid treatment for 6-7 days.

If something is nipping it: stop spot feeding and move the torch to a new spot.

Good luck though, it’s a slim chance but I hope the little guy makes it.

Your isn’t lighting or parameters

It’s external such as :

The torch is sick. A bad frag / cut not fully healed. Physical damage - internal or external. Nipping from fish. Irritation from crabs stealing food. A neighboring head was sick And cut off, but the bacteria is inside the skeleton reproducing and after a week or two, or a stress event, it starts to multiply and build. Pests. Incorrect flow. Other possibilities of course but I’m just listing off the top of my head examples and I will summarize by saying - it’s external. Meaning not light or water related.

I was going to just do my torches now , because I've lost some slowly and randomly. Bjd takes over .

Sorry only just saw this. Generally I use something called prazi power, it’s a powdered concentrated form of prazi and cheaper for long term use. I usually do 1/4 tablespoon of powder in 200ml or 16oz or rodi water, dissolve it well, then put that solution into 1 gallon of saltwater.

If you are going to use the liquid prazipro, for a 15min dip you can use a 2x-33x strength dose from the recommended instructions for a dip for fish, or a 5x dose for an in tank treatment instruction.


For the KCL dip, I use 1 tablespoon of KLC powder per 32oz of water, or 3 tablespoons per gallon of saltwater.
