Sadly, I believe those are large cell amphidinium. But hopefully I am wrong. @taricha can confirm.

Tough, ugly buggers. UV won't help. You can read through this thread to choose your favorite approach, but expect them to persist for quite some time. On the bright side, they are not toxic so nobody is going to get hurt by them

Dang, alright.... Looks like going to be a fun ride.

I beat mine with Chemiclean, used to cure red cyano. I had a bit of cyano, and I figured that dinos (or whatever they were they may have been brown hair algae) werent going away but that I should at least get rid of the cyano. I treated for like a week following Chemiclean instructions, and I wasnt able to completely wipe out all of the cyano. I was annoyed, but i hadnt even noticed all other algae was basically gone XD ive never heard of this working on dinos or other algae but it worked for me

Will this work for dosing silica?

Or would this work better?

SiO2 is like quartz sand. Not the right stuff.
Sodium silicate (sometimes "metasiliicate") is the stuff. I recommend sponge Excel by Brightwell because it has dosing instructions, then after you use up that bottle and get a feel for how your system uses the silica then you can go with a cheaper more concentrated product that gives no guidance.

So I'm battling Ostreopsis - I cut the lights (no corals) 3 days ago. Been dosing hydrogen peroxide at night and mb7 in the mornings. I have a 90w uv (233g tank, 270 ttv) on the way. I tested tonight no3 and po4. No3 is at 10 and po4 is at... 0 (Hanna ulr). What can i do to naturally raise po4 while I have some sodium phos on the way from Amazon? (will be dosing once I get it).

I guess you can shop the LFS and find the fish flake with the highest %Phosphorus in the ingredients. Should be able to find some with over 1.0% Flake with bone meal (or whole fish meal) as a leading ingredient will contain a lot of P.
Don't overfeed, just replace foods with higher P forms (until dosing solution arrives).

I ended up having great luck with a blackout and h2o2 for 2 weeks,. Finally allowed the other various algae get a foothold and knock it out. Was a pain for sure though
Did the H2o2 change any of your parameters in the tank? How did you dose it? I was thinking of taking a few of my rocks out and sooking them in the H2o2 for awhile then after a quick RODI rise put them back. I welcome thoughts on this.

Bit of a double dip between and the large cell thread.

I've been sharing a 120g apartment with Large Cell for a couple of weeks now. So far I've been dosing nutrients and keeping NO3 around 10 and PO4 about 0.1-0.14 with daily dosing. I'm getting a ton of hair algea on the rock work, have to brush it off weekly and then empty the clogged floss cups. So I have brown crud on the sand (dinos) and hair algea all over the rocks which leaves the tank looking like a metaphor for 2020.

So, to get to the point, I have silica coming today so I'll start dosing that, but as far as hair algea... Do I just "suck it up, buttercup" and just keep dosing nutrients and keep brushing the stuff off every week? Do I slow down the dosing, since nutrients are obviously available since this stuff grows back like weeds.

I've got 6 golf ball sized turbos which love the stuff, but theyve been mostly eating off the back glass and leave the rock work alone... I've gone as far as plucking them off the back and transplanting them to the rocks, only to find them back in their spot within hours. And when they do eat it, they can't keep up it seems... I don't see them move during the day, they just sit in the corner..... Not sure if they don't wanna touch it because of dinos... But I don't really see any dinos on the GHA, just the sandbed.

Halp? Lol

I thought my dinos were gone... But looks like they are back. Can someone help? Is it osteo and diatom?

Believe me I get your 2020 metaphor -- and I am lucky.

As you have GHA going yes, IMO you can dial back a bit on nutrient but keep the manual removal going. The sand based LC amphids really are the slowest to resolve for. I know it looks like ... "bad" but it is fine nobody will die. Think of it like diatoms. Eventually -- assuming you keep things stable -- it will all work out.

I could use a bit more magnification if possible. Here is a link to the ID guide. Check out some of the linked videos and look for the movement patterns for a match to yours. If I had to guess I would say Large Cell Amphidinium.

Well, I got my Hanna Silica LR in and to my surprise my source water is 0.34ppm silica (took 2 readings 0.37 and 0.31). Tank reading 0.20-0.21. Which would explain the abundance of sponges in my sump.

Rodi (6 stage) is showing 0 TDS, DI still looks "OK", but I'm wondering if I need to change all the filters once LC have cleared...all the filters and membranes are just over a year old, DI changed every few months.

Goong to start dosing Sponge Excel at 0.1ppm/day and see how things go.
