Did Fluconazole Kill all of your Bryopsis?

  • Yes

  • No

  • I'm treating my tank with it now.

  • I love Bryopsis and I'm mad that everyone is killing it.

Mine is pretty much all gone. You REALLY have to look to find any evidence that it even existed in my rockwork. That is a bold statement considering I have pukani rock and the bryopsis that I had, loved all the crevices and pockets in the rock. Making manual removal and rasping impossible. The stuff in the pumps is nearly completely white now. I'll probably do a H2O2 dip on the pumps in the next couple days if it doesn't disappear (I suspect it is actually some GHA and not bryopsis, but like I said, it is turning white too.)

Here's my thoughts on whether it kills the holdfasts... They're dead. Remember even though it looks like a complex organism, the algae is still individual cells in a colony all playing by the same rules. Without the fungi, clearly the algae cells can't survive. But time will tell! Don't anyone go reintroducing this stuff (except Twilliard):D

Yes seriously good news! I like you thought I was inevitably sunk. I was losing the battle! Amazing stuff, makes me want to run through the neighborhood flailing my arms and shouting wildly about "Fluconazole eliminating bryopsis!"

Here's my update for today, almost 96 hours in.

Hopefully everyone can see the difference. I didn't take the best of photos. The bryopsis is pretty much dead and seems to just be holding on at this point. It was doing serious damage to corals, hopefully they'll recover in the spots where die off was apparent.
Also noticed pieces of bryopsis floating around in the tank last night. They were dead white strands. I have a lot of flow in my tanks, so I was expecting that to happen sooner or later.

29 biocube 600 mg dose

Results are pretty much the same on this tank as well.
This spot seems to be slow at dying off, maybe because the bryopsis was heavily rooted and very thick.

The die off is still apparent and the corals seem to be showing through it. We'll see what happens in the next 24.

I wonder if the tablets are safe to use. I only need enough for a $20 gallon tank. I found a place that sells them per individual pill but they don't have capsules only tablets.

Those thicker areas are even starting to white now. It won't be long until that starts thinning out too.

If you leave them in water to dissolve, I see no reason why not.

The pills are the same but the binders and wax coating will be different. I don't know if it will harm anything or not.

Tablets contain 50, 100, 150, or 200 mg of fluconazole and the following inactive ingredients: microcrystalline cellulose, dibasic calcium phosphate anhydrous, povidone, croscarmellose sodium, FD&C Red No. 40 aluminum lake dye, and magnesium stearate

When I say the tablets are the same I mean as in they are the same medication. The tabs are not the same mg as the capsules.

Edit:
Well actually I found 50mg 100mg and 200mg capsules as well

I am not seeing anything that stands out as a problem but they do use a lot of different binders I see.
