I have gravel in freshwater. I remove the dirt as I have high waste fish, the bacteria is staying in my filter media and stuck onto the gravel.Dont vacuum in freshwater or saltwater. What ur doing is removing bacteria and essential microfauna and good organics from your sand bed if you wanna have a clean sand bed just put a powerhead in your tank
