SPS certainly did better when I went from Fluval lights to AI lights
Never had lighting upgrade, but pretty confident there will be a success story if I win one of these orpheks
Couple years ago I was working part time at a lfs had a customer come in and was having bad luck with his reef tank. I wont use brands but he had a "generic" led on the tank something people use all the time with success. All parameters were good (I hate when people do this) I double checked them from his sample. This left age of tank and lighting, tank and light were 4 years old. He had sent in icp nothing out of whack, he was ready to give up. Even "easy low light" corals would do poorly after a few months. N and p were a little high but nothing I myself hadnt run with. He spent some serious money upgrading to two of the lights we sold and used, a well-known brand with years of proof. With in 2 months, he was back with pics and thanks his reef tank had done a complete 180. A couple tester sps were basing out and growing new branches, something he said had never happened, and coralline was growing everywhere. We used his old lights to set up a nice display fuge tied to his system, they seemed to work well for that. I am unsure why people cheap out on lighting when they just spent $1000s on a tank with all the bells and whistles. Cheap doesnt necessarily mean bad.
I upgraded lights and my corals started growing! Then I let my phosphates drop and got rust and let my GHA grow and I learned lessons and now my corals are happy again!
My most recent upgrade let the colors come back. My sps was starting to brown a little. Upgrading let them get their colors back
I went from LPS and zoas to keeping sps...

My first major upgrade was Metal Hilides! Picked up some Aqua Medic Pendants they worked great. I went from lps straight sps. It was great!

I don't have one yet.
My tank originally had a secondhand light that was missing half of its leds and didn't have a timer. Upgrading to a fully functioning light, with a built in timer, improved the visual appeal and overall growth of the corals in the tank.
I think with a more natural spectrum then what im currently using my corals will color up even more esp those in the lower par regions due to the superior coverage this light offers .
