DAILY QUESTION: How do you manage light schedules to prevent algae growth while supporting coral health?

This is a really good question. If algae take over a well established reef I would not act on the light but I would try to identify other causes. For example I could increase filtration or act on nutrients or even add a team of herbivores. If I could act only on the light, I would increase oxidation by increasing the white channel to eliminate the nutrients that the algae feed on while trying at the same time not to let my corals lack food to grow strong healthy and colorful.

As a first feature I document myself on the manufacturing company. It must be a company that always tries to offer the best and must be committed to researching new solutions and new technologies. Then I look at the characteristics of the LED light. It must have an ideal spectrum for the growth and color of corals, it must also be dimmable and highly programmable via smartphone application. Finally, the power supply and LEDs must be of high quality to be able to guarantee efficient light over the years. Orphek with its new icon nature fully reflects all these characteristics.

Different researches have been conducted on the role of light demonstrating how the correct spectrum and the correct energy provided by light are of vital importance to make several biochemical reactions occur within the cell and therefore to allow living organisms many biological functions.

My advice is to always rely on leading companies in the sector. Orphek is one of them. In this way there is no risk of buying the wrong light for your reef. Subsequently it is good to collect advice from other users and other reefers who use LED lights in their reef. In this case it is advisable to register on forums where you can find competent aquarists whose advice is sincere and useful. Reef2Reef in my opinion is one of the best forums to achieve this.

DAILY QUESTION: How do you balance light intensity and duration to achieve optimal results in your reef tank?

I was taught to start out with lower intensity, raising that up slightly over a couple weeks. I usually have my lights in for about six hours a day. I have had decent results with this method.

Not necessarily a success story but I had a smaller light on a smaller tank. I upgraded to slightly larger tank and upgraded my light at the same time. Even on the bigger tank, the Par and Spread of the new fixture definitely improved my shadowing and light penetration.

Supplementing the pucks with strip lights helped to even out coral growth. Makes me want to invest in more panel-type lighting and move away from pucks.
