yes, any living thing(outside of corals, i believe) that dies in your tank will cause some sort of ammonia/nitrate spike

Hello and Welcome to R2R! I look for snails that are on their sides and try to turn them upright or snail facing down towards the gravel. Having a 180g and doing water change every 2 weeks, I don't worry about some dying.

Die off and subsequent level of nutrient spikes are inversely proportional to tank size. The larger the tank, the smaller the spike.
