High phosphates and nitrates and my LFS advice

Yeah, I've had good luck with their water and had good outcomes. The big issue was the one new guy. I'll avoid him until he is gone lol. I do typically make my own, just wanted some of their red sea mix(I use instant ocean which takes forever to mix)

There's always one guy isn't there.

I had a LFS employee tell my I'm killing my tank using IO. lol.

Nitrates look to be around 60ppm. He didn't tell me the test result for phosphates. I have an order for hanna testing reagents in for my phosphate ulr device, but will be sunday before I can retest.

Having 60ppm nitrate after 2.5 years indicates an imbalance in input/output of organics.

Id have a look at your export functions. You may need to increase their effectiveness to lower nitrates.

Water changes is only one of many types of processes to pull dissolved organics from the the water.

Meh. My snails and crabs did great when my nitrates were ~80 and phosphates were ~2 (there is deliberately no decimal), probably on account of a good food supply from algae being able to grow easy.

It was when my nutrients came down to 5/0.1 respectively that I saw CUC “thinning out”.

everybody gonna have different methods, but if I had your tank. I’d just have a skimmer, ~30lbs of rock, good flow, 1-2 week water changes, and that’s it. Run a water polisher or hob filter with floss once in a while after turkey basting rocks.
