Here's a system we installed recently. Includes a twin tank alternating water softener (capable of supplying soft water 24/7 without interruption), an auto backwashing carbon tank (to remove chlorine), and a 4,000 gpd RO System. All of this is controlled by a float switch in a 1000 g tank, a lockout switch so the RO can't run when the carbon tank is backwashing for 16 minutes once a week, and a relay and low voltage transformer so we don't introduce high voltage into the storage tank. All the equipment was installed on a loft accessible only by ladder. Works like a charm!
