My only concern is the lack of water volume due to the tank being rimmed. I’m still considering it.
I remember a YouTube video on how to remove the rim. Pretty slick.

Ah understood. That makes a lot of sense. Are there any other options for rimmed tanks? Or would all overflows have this problem with rimmed tanks? I would think so but thought I would ask. For example, would modular Marine overflows have this problem?
I didn’t ignore the question , you just got better replies and

I have a 40b rimmed tank...no problem with installing the overflow at the correct height. Modular Marine template tells you the correct height. One side of the template is for rimmed and you flip it over for rimmless

I placed mine differently from the drill guide. I placed it so the weir is were I want it. The guide looks to be for rimless tanks. Did not try it turned side ways.

You cant use the template from Eshopps as designed on a rimmed tank with out it being too low. As of late probably could have turned it side ways. Its not impossible to determine were it goes with out the template. Mine still could have been higher.
yes, that’s was my experience
Hold the weir up to the inside of the tank, move to what you think is your desired position. outline the weir bulkhead on the outside of the tank with a sharpie. cut it out

On the Eshopps, you can also change the water height level by flipping the weir. On a rimmed tank there are marks on the template I think for rimmed tanks.
One of the differences between the two brands you are looking at is the Eshopps sits flush to the glass on both sides, whereas the other brands, the overflow box sit away from the glass on the inside of your tank.
I didn’t know this …
