Not spending money on new coral.
Or fish!

In June I said that a Severn’s Pencil wrasse would be my last fish for a few months…
not even 2 days later I returned with a Diamond Tail Flasher Wrasse and a Magnificent Foxface.

Well, this fish seems to have taken a liking to Elegance and in that has learnt anything fleshy must be yummy… he’s now going for my Bubble Coral after I removed the Elegance.

Being new to the hobby, trying to secure my rock structure together with EMarco 400 cement. Tried it last night and didn't stick well to my live rock after letting it set for 2 hours with intermittent watering of the rocks. Thinking it might be due to the lack of rock to rock contact it had and relying on the cement being the medium for the bond?

From experience on building my "floating reef", the cement is tough to use on its own. When it cures, it's very strong, but it does not do well and holding immediately so you are limited in what you can do. Basically -- the rocks should be able to sit on their own if you want to only use cement. If you're doing anything creative or defying gravity, you will want to use epoxy + super glue instead. You can go back over joints after they're secured with super glue and/or epoxy with the concrete to add more structural integrity or for looks later if you want.

This was my next step to try. I would like to have shelves/creative aqua scaping that would make way more sense to reinforce this way, then add more structural integrity/aesthetics to it shortly afterward.

Yeah, I would recommend that. If you are doing the scape dry you can also get some super glue accelerator which makes things much faster/easier. You don't realize until you're holding a stubborn piece of rubble for 10 minutes how annoying it is. :)

Also, use smaller pieces of rock if you really want to utilize dead space and build arches, pillars, shelves, etc. I made the mistake of using too big pieces of rock and it limits what you can do because you run out of real estate quick. Especially in smaller tanks.

Its with live rock (from a LFS so as live as I can tell haha). I did get pieces that are probably too big and will likely chisel some off and build different structures. Its about 54lbs, with about 20lbs of Tampa Bay Saltwater Live Rock coming first week of Sep.

Can't keep sps or entrusting corals and even a number of LPS alive for more than 6 to 8 wks, everything just withers away.

Pretty sure stability has need the issue. That and high N and P... N was at 50ppm and P was at .25 consistently... started carbon dosing last week.

Salinity keeps dropping from 1.026 to 1.025 due to skimmate, I believe... finding balance with that now.

Added back a calcium reactor a month or so ago. Alk, calkc and mag have been fairly stable 8, 410, 1250... some fluctuations up to alk of 8.5 here and there.

I'll give it a month or two and try to add a few more corals. Wish me luck.

I'm just glad to hear people still talking about the short bus in 2024. I wonder how many don't know what that means...
My reply wasn't for them as the newer students had to walk. Once they got to school they were educated to the same level as the short bus kids were back when things made sense and know one tried to fixed their pronouns.

Knowing where to place my corals to ensure they fill in the empty space in a way that looks good.
My tank is pretty new so I have tons of empty rock. Sometimes I think it would be beneficial if stores showed pictures of a full size coral colony before fragging it into tiny pieces! Makes it harder to visualize.
