Well, I guess it is time for a build thread from the Nordics :)

In the beginning of the year I decided that it is time to quit reefing, or to start over. The old custom shallow tank was almost 10 years old, with palythoas and GSP all over the place. The old tank had seen ups and downs from massive growth to normal summer bleeching events and failed "experiments". I also did not want to give my friends away, including two ocellaris (premium snowflake and domino), melanurus wrasse, yellow prawn goby which had paired with a serpent starfish and a maxima clam.

Since the only reasonable place in the apartment for a reef tank was a wardrobe recess, I was looking for Waterbox 90.3 to fill the void. Luckily, the customer service for European customers is pretty crap for that model (never knowing when the tank is actually available), so I decided to go for Nyos Opus 300 G2, ordered from a German online vendor. Unusual route for me, since I usually prefer to support LFS. The tank arrived nicely packed directly from Nyos, and was carried in the apartment with the help from a friend.

The dimensions of the new tank were pretty much perfect for the spot.

The first thing to do was to modify the sump to fit Smart Roller S from Reef Factory. Very easy using the Red Sea sump modification kit, just by removing one wall from the sedimentation chamber. The Smart Roller S fits nicely (at least the G2 version supplied with a ball valve), the only other modification needed is cutting the main drain a little bit shorter.

After getting most of the equipment in place, it was time to fill the tank. Most of the live rock was new rock (Aquaforest Rock aquascaped with Nyos cement + superglue) cycled since March using Dr. Tim's & Bio S with Aquaforest Live Sand.

To be continued...

The main lights (2X HYDRA26HD) have been upgraded with Luxdium Gold Engines, and for a fill light, there was two AI Blades. The other Blade was defective (white LEDs in one array do not work) and the vendor is trying to decide what to do with it. If they cannot fix it, or send a new one, I would be ready to order Luxdium engines to my old AI Primes instead :)

Eheim feeder is attached upside down to the roof of the, filled with assorted pellets & coral food - feeding three times per day.

The tank has still room to grow, planning for a mixed reef with some sticks and LPS/softies.

During one week of not being at home, the tank pH had increased from 8.3 to 8.7 towars the end of the light cycle. I guess I should have know how much CO2 from two humans suppress tank pH :D

Added an extra pump to move water in the dosing chamber to prevent precipitation, no wonder that alkalinity had dropped quite significantly while the pH was that high. Nevertheless, I decided to swich back to kalkwasser from Zlements pHPlus as soon I'm back from vacation, maybe continuing with elevated pH experiment a'la Chummingham's Reef.

Fish and corals seem to be fine, and everyone was happy to get frozen food for a while. Can't wait to get some sticks from a friend after holidays, and maybe shop some more gonis/torches.

Hi, loving your tank. I am also considering buying the Nyos for my upgrade. Any challenges that you experienced or wish you knew after setting up?

Thank you! :) No challenges whatsover, it is a beautiful tank. Really love the clean look due to clear silicone. My old custom tank was pretty noisy, and this new one is completely silent. I highly recommend getting one, seems they have new sizes for this year, I just wish I would have room for 440 version :D

Got a used Deltec kalkstirrer, and now dosing most of the kalk during night with D-D P1 Pro pump. Currently the daily pH max is 8.6 towards the end of light cycle, and 8.3 in the end of dark period. Hopefully running most of the kalk during night soothens some of the variation in pH.

On Tuesday, picking up some sticks from another reefer :)

Kalkstirrer, DIY airdryer/CO2 scrubber connected to skimmer (updated to Nyos Quantum 120) seems to keep pH at 8.4-8.6 so everything is fine and dandy. Doing currently in-tank peroxide dosing due to velvet, other than that, no more drama :face-with-rolling-eyes:

I got rid of the chaeto which kept phosphate (and according to ICP many of the traces) at zero, now fortunately 0.05 after dosing Nyos Phosphate+ for a while. Well, the lack of traces could be also due to peroxide dosing but decided to try something different. Dosing phosphate appeared to keep only chaeto happy :D

Felt creative today, and built a "cryptic sump basket", this is going to be filled with live rock and left alone in sump - hopefully to decrease elevated DOC-values.

Edit: Also some gonies added

A couple of additions from Leonardo's Reef. The tank has still space left to add some corals :)

Started to add some cycled live rock pieces to cryptic basket.

IMG_4282.jpeg

Also included three old AI Primes, there should be enough light for SPS.

Great tank, looking good,
i see you changed the flow pattern, did you found that better for the mixed flow?

Thank you, slowly getting there. Yes, was not getting enough random flow on SPS (polyp extension is much better now). The torches did not like the higher speed. Also needed to put a regular Tunze to point at sticks :D.

I'll most likely end up buying one additional Nero on that side which has SPS to create even more random water movement :)

Picked up some Indo-live rocks from a local reef shop. For now going to let them cook and refresh the tank biome at later point.

LFS had Apogee for loan, so I ended up measuring some PAR values with Optimized III-program (Hydra26HD Luxdium Gold Engines). Good know that cooking SPS would be possible, and 50% power will most likely be enough for now (supplemented with non-HD Primes and Blades at reduced levels).
