Hey guys, so I've been wondering how to keep my zoas colors as vivid as when I first get them. Any suggestions on what to do? I've tried ab+, had to stop using it because my nitrate was getting too high.....and my green bay packer look like greenish Brown with the yellow rim now.

Lighting? Could be spectrum or intensity.

I was just told that I need my lights on longer. I had them at 6 hrs. 4hrs daylight, 2hrs moonlight. Just switched it today to 8 hrs, with 5. Or 6hrs daylight and the rest moonlight.

What would you suggest for spectrum? I have the fluval marine 59w. With the app so I can switch up the different colors added to the light and all that. I just dont know enough about the lighting to know what's best for them.

I don't know enough about lights to really answer that. Zoa's tend to like somewhat dirty water and probably mediumish intensity. Most corals need blue light, the white tends to be for our viewing pleasure.

this is the zoa garden, you can see the one that looks like he's slowly melting and closed up. And the other picture is to give you an idea of the tank set up and distance from lighting

Agreed I have noticed they like dirty water. Lol but how do I bring the color back in my green bay packer? He's the one on the bottom left in the zoomed picture of the zoas

For being a beginner coral it's crazy how temperamental they are. I have one fade and melt while the one right next to it is popping out new polyps daily.

Yes!!!@ its crazy I don't understand it. The zoa that is melting currently was my fastest growing and always looked the happiest for the short time ive had it and now it's took a turn for the worst. Doesn't make any sense. Lol

These are the types of things that frustrate me to the point of wanting to give up. (Don't worry I'm not yet, clearly) but, super annoyed right now. No special corals survive in my tank at all, they start to bleach then randomly come back, the bleach out and do that back and forth several times until they finally just completely die. So I only do LPS and softies now. The only think that seems to love my tank are the duncans and my one hammer. Lol. Other than that it's always a risk, and idk if they'll do well or not. I mean, my xenia and my GSP melted away on me if that tells ya anything. Which still makes no sense to me. Ok I'm done ranting. Thanks. Lol

Make sure your alkalinity is stable. That's the biggest most important thing with corals. Sudden alk changes can kill a coral fast. pH and temp swings can stress them out a lot as well.

Yea, I'm going to be testing my all every other day to keep an eye out for now. Right now my salinity is too high. So that's worrisome. My all is at 11.2 tho. Just did a water change last weekend

Is this the lighting you normally run?
Some of those are looking like they are reaching for light!!
What lights are you using and what percentages are you running them at?

When you say 8 hrs…. Are you still at 5-6 hrs daylight and 2-3 hrs moonlight?
Disclaimer!!! I know nothing and no expert! :D But if you think about it, most corals if not all come from areas with lots of daylight. I run my lights to kick on at 10:30 am with a long ramp of 1.5 hrs so that at noon the lights are almost to the highest setting. They stay there for almost 8 hrs and start ramping downto nearly off at 10:30 pm. Then I use a moonlight because I’m a night owl and like to see the tank.
Also white lights will hide the fluorescent colors. Some corals will look more brown under whites. It’s why the coral vendors all use heavy blues… to make those colors pop!
