No signs of bullying?
Wrasse are more resistant to most parasites like ich and velvet but are prone to injury and stress. I believe uronema, flukes, and cyanide poisoning, are the most likely to affect wrasse. UNWD and spinal injuries are also a possibility for fairy wrasse.
This was a wild caught wrasse so cyanide poisoning is definitely a possibility. I didn’t see signs of uronema (I also did not realize that uronema was something I should be watching out for with wrasses, thank you for bringing it up to my attention), I think maybe there may have been something wrong with his mouth but I am no expert and I was rushing because I didn’t want my five year old to see so I didn’t take a picture.

Thanks for the response. Just seemed pretty odd. Thankfully tank mates all look good thus far. Crossing fingers they stay that way.

Mouth injuries are also a common wrasse issue

it’s not often I ask this for my own help but…

What are some of your favourite (obtainable) wrasses? Considering I plan to upgrade and also remove the Jade, I’m looking for some wrasses. Anything from sand sleepers to rock sleepers, let’s hear them!

So far I have the thoughts of;
Halichoeres prosopeion (Depending if they’re aggressive for not - @SaltyT any ideas)
Halichoeres lapillus
Macropharyngodon negrosensis
Macropharyngodon kuiteri
Halichoeres biocellarus
Paracheilinus rubricaudalis
Paracheilinus mccoskeri
Halichoeres melasmopomus
Halichoeres leucoxanthus
Anampses femininus
(depending on how risky I feel)
Anampses twistii
Cirrhilabrus
roseafascia (With known risks of aggression and having the Fini already)
Cirrhilabrus exquisitus
Cirrhilabrus naokoae
Paracheilinus cyaneus
Paracheilinus piscilineatus
(If I ever find one)
Pseudojuloides severnsi
Pseudojuloides pluto
(If I want to risk it and find one)
Pseudojuloides kaleidos (;))
Pseudojuloides xanthometopon

P.s. I will do further research into compatibility so if you’re unsure what wrasse I have then don’t worry too much :)

I’ve never kept H. Prosopeion but their temperament is reported to be “middle of the road” like a melanurus.

I thought that may be the case as they seem to be a smaller Halichoeres and so likely won’t be all too aggressive.

I feel like you know all my favorites already and we rarely agree.

Halichoeres prosopeion (Depending if they’re aggressive for not - @SaltyT any ideas)
Awesome
Halichoeres lapillus
Meh, just an almost macropharyngodon
Macropharyngodon negrosensis
Awesome obviously
Macropharyngodon kuiteri
Meh, just a more difficult H melasmopamus. I think the M meleagris is still the prettiest
Halichoeres biocellarus
Like it
Paracheilinus rubricaudalis
Yes!!
Paracheilinus mccoskeri
Like it
Halichoeres melasmopomus
Love it
Halichoeres leucoxanthus
Yawn,
the H Marginatus is the prettiest Halichoeres that I've seen but only as a full male.
Anampses femininus (depending on how risky I feel)
Good luck!
Anampses twistii
One of my least favorite Anampses TBH. I see this one a lot and its never really tempted me. I'd go neoguinaicus or meleagrides.
Cirrhilabrus roseafascia (With known risks of aggression and having the Fini already)
Big but pretty. Though I'd go for any in the bathyphillius complex. Thats my favorite complex.
Cirrhilabrus exquisitus
Like obviously
Cirrhilabrus naokoae
Of course!
Paracheilinus cyaneus
Too bad mine seems to have done permanent damage to its dorsal spines
Paracheilinus piscilineatus (If I ever find one)
Meh, I much prefer the filamentosus or one of those flashy new species.
Pseudojuloides severnsi
Love to see one!
Pseudojuloides pluto (If I want to risk it and find one)
Would be awesome!!
Pseudojuloides kaleidos (;))
I was trying to get one myself
Pseudojuloides xanthometopon
Not as cool as the others but still very cool
P.s. I will do further research into compatibility so if you’re unsure what wrasse I have then don’t worry too much :)
For an outside the box recommendation my Bodianus anthioides is a very cool and so far very docile fish. It acts more like an angel then a wrasse. And of course you should get a N macrolepidotus.

If I found an Alfiani I wouldn’t hesitate. They look animated and hand drawn!

The Bathyphilus complex is one I’ll always consider. But I don’t see them often and when I do they can be up there in price.
The Twistii I only really like when mature but I would absolutely have the Hybrid over the pure any day.

The Anthioides is one I’d die for, just my main fear is the aggression that Hogs are known for. And obviously the same for the Macroleptidotus if it wasn’t the risk of being similar to the Dragon with potential aggression… Dang I need a predatory wrasse gang and a calmer wrasse gang.

I’m the opposite with twistii I think juveniles are pretty but adults are meh.

Completely agree, you need a peaceful wrasse tank and an aggressive wrasse tank :)

I wish I could have a tank set up solely for the Jade, that way he’d be the mascot of the wrasses but not actually in the gang. Maybe one day I’ll have a tank best suited for a Jade. Until then I think I’m going to give up with the hopes of a peaceful Jade and move him onto a better home where he’ll have a nice large tank to roam and pest hunt to his hearts content!

But, as I always look for an upside to moving any fish on… I can get that Attenuatus to truly display or attempt more genera of wrasses like the pencils (Which I do have my LFS hunting for one as they’ve had them thrive in higher activity tanks).

My hogfish seems so peaceful I think I’d trust it in the peaceful tank but then my melanarus is also very peaceful in that tank but was not in the peaceful tank.

They are beautiful!
How is the black back wrasse doing for you? I love the look.
Thank you! She’s a great wrasse, she ignores my other wrasses and just patrols the live rock all day. She does need to be fed frequently, but despite the frequent feedings she’s a slow grower, after 2 years she’s only grown an inch.
