@Stang67 don't you dose moonshine? Want to chime in here?
yep I do the shine but not the carbon. I was trying vinegar for the Ni/phos but it wasn't having the effect that I was hoping for. Bactobalance 2viles 1 a week seem to be keeping it mostly in check. Also run a fuge with macro. Changed out my fuge light and seems to be doing much better now. also was running gfo a little a day but will probably pull that off now that the fuge is doing better.

I use vinegar. Dosing 30 ml daily in about 100 gallons of water. Doesn't seem to be doing much.

I been seeing vinegar is like 8 to 10 times less potent then vodka depending on which article I have read. I also been seeing some people mix both...I just woke up waiting on coffee and your the first post I saw....

I dosed vodka back in the day, and it worked really well to drop nitrates. I did that in parallel to a Korallin sulfur denitrator. This was back in the ULNS days. Now, I dose bactobalance, which is like Carbon dosing+. Once you get your nutrients to where you want them, Bactobalance does a pretty good job at keeping them there by simultaneously dosing carbon, bacteria and nutrients.

Vinegar is effective, as well- though, as mentioned, not as good as vodka. Plus, it has a deleterious effect on Ph. Sugar has fallen out of favor.

I'm not too familiar with RedSea's product line, but I love Bactobalance. It sounds like you need to get your nutrients under control first, though. What are your current numbers?
Nitrate hovers around 50ppm and PO4, well hahna checker says .90...I also have been reading about Brightwell Aquatics Reef BioFuel as people are saying they use it instead of vodka etc...I have to look into that.

Yes I am not to thrilled with Red Sea stuff, did not work for me but others say it has so to each their own right. I am not bashing any product or brand ever, I am just happy there are so many choices...

Just checked on tank. WOW sump water is super clear. I do think the 200 Reef Octopus may be too much so I may swap it out with the Tunze 9410 I have in the second chamber to handle the ozone and the vodka or what ever carbon I am going to use. I think the reef octopus 300 INT has finally broken in. super wet dark stuff.

yes I saw those charts the last few days during my quest for information.I also learned a second skimmer helps especially if the one you have is too small for your tank. I added a second since I am going to be doing ozone, soon as hook it all up...

Good Morning, Team!

The Gem did not ship yesterday, so I only did a 24 hour blackout. We will repeat the process once it arrives. For now, everyone is happy, healthy, and getting along swimmingly (see what I did there?)!

Wrasseputin has not emerged from the sandbed yet, but that is to be expected.

The dartfish are living up to their name and darting in and out of the rockwork in their little school! Exactly the movement I was looking for. Such a great compliment to the anthias.

Wu is huge. Seriously, like Pootie sized. I wasn't expecting 1) an adult; and B) (yup, still doing that) such a plump, healthy specimen. Absolute stunner! I will say though, that after the gem goes in, we'll be full up on fish. I may have to turn in my Tang Police badge.

What can I say, though: the rules were made for thee, not for me...

In other news, we have two shipments of coral arriving today! Seven acropora colonies and one anacropora. Stay tuned!

Namaste.

hmmm. You know I like Brightwell stuff. Some one just told me about Brightwell Aquatics Reef Bio Fuel..They use it, it is a carbon source product...any one here ever use it ????
Not personally, no. I have heard good things, though. I will say, however, that vodka is probably your most cost effective method. Just go slow and follow the graphs.

I used Biofuel for a bit. I didn't realize it was carbon. It made my corals happy.
