TANK TALK: The reef aquarium hobby is incredibly rewarding but can be full of challenges for the novice and veteran alike. Tell us about what draws you to the hobby. What do you find most rewarding?
Daily entry: Finding that elusive balance and then watching as coral and fish thrive... until the next envitable crisis! Currently... not really a crisis but an issue nonetheless, CORAL WARFARE! Solution, surely I need a bigger tank...

OFFICIAL ENTRY: Currently have a nano mixed reef but really want to go bigger and a lid would mean I could house those more adventurous fish! The feeder would also be great to ensure fish are well looked after when I'm away.

Hey @Avast Justin and @Top_Lids a good tank talk topic with so.much Christmas travel?

TANK TALK: Being Christmas time and so many people go out of town to visit family, what are your plans for extended vacations or work trips? Do you use a local reefer, a family member, or do you trust entirely on automation on your aquariums?

OR similarly

TANK TALK: Since so many people travel for Christmas, do you have plans for your tanks when you're gone? Do you use any electronics to keep tabs on the aquarium or do you trust everything to chance?

I know a lot of people use auto testers and dosers to keep their levels in check and other people use cameras to watch everything.

Personally, I have my in-laws come by and check things out and top things off as needed but I use auto dosers for anything that needs more attention.

These are definitely something that has me worried. I don't get out much or have extended periods of time away from home much at all. With that said, I don't have a good plan in place at this time. As of right now, I am fortunate enough to have met another local reefer. I mentioned to him that I'd be happy to keep an eye on his stuff should he ever need help. In return, he offered the same. He's a much more advanced keeper which has been nice to have someone to seek wisdom from.

Currently, the best I have is a wifi temp controller installed.

I also installed a battery operated airpump and stone that will activate when it notices the power is out. Got that thanks to the R2R Secret Santa!

That's great to have local reefers that can help each other. If you look around the forums, many localities have a local forum. That's a great place to find other local reefers. Facebook is another great place to check.

Luckily, I'm also a part of BAR (Bay Area Reefers) and that has proven immensely helpful already. I've been gifted some amazing corals and even some equipment. My current build is a used IM 50gal AIO Lagoon tank. As a bonus, he gifted me a used MP10 and a bunch of Hannah testers! All for being a supporting member. I think another Christmas gift to myself, after the Holidays, will be to become a supporting member here as well. The wisdom is worth the small price IMO.

Mostly chance, but I give it the best opportunity for success that I can.

I have two people in the office designated to take care of the tank while I'm gone. The set up is almost autopilot now. Just have to make sure fluids are topped up and that tubes of liquid food get changed out when low. For bonus points, they can target feed TDO pellets to the firefish, yasha goby and, now, pinkies, since those fish are less aggressive eaters.

I've assured them that the state of my tank will not be a factor in their annual performance review ;) ;)

I have a friend that comes by daily for feeding the fish. Camera, to make sure nothing looks out of the ordinary and local reefer friend that can swing by if anything serious happens.

I doubt I'll be able to do a full automation but if I do go away, I already have someone who has the keys to my place and will be able to attend the aquarium if any attention is needed.

The main draw is the ocean in my home. I grew up on the water/ocean. The sound of the water and saltair is perfect.

I’m gone a lot for work or travel with family. I have full automation with the apex, trident and ato along with feeder and if I want auto water change. I have a tank camera in the room to check on outside and a sump camera inside the stand that I can pan or zoom to check on most things inside.

If needed I have a good friend who is able and usually willing to come and handle anything if I’m not able. Or the in-law handles minor stuff like feedings refilling the ato or calling for help haha

This is a worry for me, as I don’t know anyone who would be willing to feed the fish that I’d trust to do so. Therefore I’d probably rely on either fasting the fish or an auto feeder.

Grandson is only two :) so nah I don’t think he’d be good at feeding them. But yeah if we were to head out of town most likely they’d go too. We are a pretty small family and don’t really travel, so in the case where we did they’d probably join with.
