I may have revealed my tendencies with some earlier posts but yeah, I love to tinker around with stuff.

TANK TALK: What’s the coolest surprise you’ve discovered in or about your aquarium?
Oh, here's another one. Not for entries.

10 gallon IM Nuvo 10 AIO. Started with 100% TBS premium rock and TBS sand. Chamber 1 is caddy with floss, carbon/purigen and that's really it. Middle chamber nothing. Return chamber return pump and that void space under Chambers 1 and 2 that you can't get to for anything. Tank has included lid.

About a month or two in, I shine a light in the return pump section and find... a gorilla crab. How in the world did that get there!?

At this point I was still freaked out by hitchhikers and wanted that gorilla crab gone. Couldn't catch it. And it had that entire crawl space under Chambers 1 and 2 to hide. Impossible.

Fast forward about 5 months. Gorilla crab is still king of the return chamber. Lots of pineapple sponges growing down there and presumably other detritus flowing through. Not only still alive, but growing!

One lackadaisical day, King Kong Crab was scaling the return pump pipe to the top. Seeing this, I snuck over with tongs and nabbed his highness by the leg, yanked him out of the chamber and into a tupper with tank water. Asked around on the local forum if anyone wanted him. No takers. Didn't have the heart to slay the king, so back to his return pump kingdom.

Fast forward another month. Crab is once again tempting fate at the top of the return pump pipe. Nab him again. This time, a local reefer says his daughter loved the picture of the crab and wanted it as a sump buddy. To which I happily passed the king on to his new kingdom.

Edit: picture of His Highness:

BONUS TANK TALK: Our hobby can be very technically challenging for many. How do you approach the technical side of the hobby? Is it something to be feared or reveled in?

During my planning and researching stages, I did a lot of researching and watching setups of how other reefers use their controllers to do things such as automating tasks and monitoring their aquarium. Then there also the technical side of why this happened or why this failed. That part worries me and is what makes me feel this hobby will be challenging.

It's hard to pick just one or two surprises. Currently I'm really excited because a pair of my RFAs just reproduced! Only managed to see the tiny guy, because he's neon green on the black sand bed, just before I was about to do a water change. I was able to use a turkey baster (not the used for Thanksgiving lol) and suck him up and put him in a small breeder box in the tank to stay safe. Even better cause I just got a free magnifier for BRS's giveaways I can use to keep an eye on him. Wins over here

Some people would disagree about it being "cool" but the other day I looked in my tank and saw the first Asterina starfish in this tank. Ok, so nothing new there, pretty much everyone ends up with them eventually, right? The cool part was the wiR of this guy! He was over an inch across.

Here he is hanging out on some homemade Aragocrete rock.
Dude I love seeing these guys in my tanks. I know others say they get out of hand to pest amounts. But so far they've never been a problem for me.

I know when I first started out with my first nano 13.5 tank, I was using a lot of outdated information i had learned from my father growing up in the 90's. It wasn't till I found R2R was I able to actually get a tank running successfully. I made a lot of mistakes but with the help from fellow members. I've been able to resolve them. There's still a lot of the advanced techniques and technologies to learn about. But I'm excited to get the chance to learn and use.

In my old 75 they were around but never a problem. I've seen tanks get overrun with them and that I can understand.

BONUS TANK TALK: Our hobby can be very technically challenging for many. How do you approach the technical side of the hobby? Is it something to be feared or reveled in?
The "puzzle" is the part that probably interests me as much as the beautiful fish and corals. Being retired, you won't see me spending hundreds of dollars on the WWC corals or any of the fish in Andrew Sandler's tank, so I have done more DIY. Researched and built my stand. Used an arduino and six Kamore pumps to create a doser that updates an online database. Phone app in process. I have another arduino for temp, leak detection, waterlevels, PH, etc.
I am currently trying to figure out the Moonshiners and ReefBlueprint systems for element dosing.

If I could only figure out how to have a queen angelfish in my tank of corals. I raised a french angelfish in my last tank from 1.5" to 12" and it would be fun to do again.

I love things super technical, i however loose attention of said technical thing.

I went head first into hard plumbing my recent tank. I've plumbs lfs tanks and only soft plumbed my personal tanks. Left the lfs with hard plumb. The accuracy was not as necessary for those systems. I had nothing but issues with leaking because some parts were just slightly too long or short. After an unknown flood for a week, I tossed that idea and went right back to soft plumbing. it is either too technical or I am just incapable of the required tolerances for hard plumbing into bulkheads on a sump.

I don't think this is something that should be feared, but you definitely need to go in with a good amount of prep, patience. And some trial runs
