I got a @geo cryptic reactor and put about 20 pounds of TBS rubble in it. I called the ladies TBS and told what I had they knew exactly what to load me up with. I did this for 2 reasons 1) I was fighting LCA and wanted to add some diversity to my established tank. This was part of a strategy that ultimately did beat LCA. Then, I knew I was going to temporarily move my 130G display into a stock tank for 2-4 months as I started to set up a new much larger tank. This worked magic, it was like an insta-tank. All I had in the sump was this reactor pushing about 450 gallons through. I moved half my fish fist as I knew I was going to need herbivores in the new set up (no real biofilm on the plastic). BUT, I let it run about 10 days on the cryptic and I guess it did help jump start the system. After 10 days, move some fish, checked ammonia daily for 10 days and nothing. Then I started to move everything over. It was a big help. I am going to say the diversity really does help. I just ordered 250 pounds of their sand and another 150 pounds of rock. Uber thrilled about this. I am one for not keeping rocks or bio in my sump (just preference). But, since I started using their stuff in a cryptic, for me, I won't have it any other way. Once I get my system up and running, I plan to get more of their stuff to fill a 60G cryptic sump I am going to add to my system at about month 4.

The more surface area the better I would think. If you never plan on using it in your display, I would say either nano or rubble. Rubble will get you more surface area vs. nano. I forget the price difference. I actually used their website and ordered nano and put what I was doing in the notes. They called me and advised me to go a different route.
That’s incredible… I’ve only heard good things so I’m going to try it. This tank was moved so sand is about 3-4 mths old but tank around 4 years. I still have a diatom bloom and some dinos but not many…. Crossing my fingers!!!

Thank you very much for the info !!!

Dumb question, but are these rocks pest free? Aka, it won't have pests that eat corals, and/or kill my fish (ich/velvet)? Thanks.

No, they are wet and from the ocean :) You can potentially get a pest or disease. Probably uncommon but not impossible.

I love live rock regardless and would use all live if I had the $$

Correction: I called them after I mucked up my order. They are really rock solid, no pun in tended. To whomever asked about pests, I didn't get any on the rubble, that's really really small rock. HOWEVER, on 2 previous wet gulf rock orders I have received we had a ton of life come in on it. Some really cool, some really bad. We still have a bio cube running from last July with a mantis in it from our first order. My wife hand feeds it 2-3 times a week. It's actually trained to come out and take the shrimp off the tweezers. Now if we could get it to eat the aiptasia that are in the tank, sigh... On the 150 pounds I have coming and sand, I plan to let it sit in the display for about a month simply spread out. Turning the rocks daily and looking for anything that didn't get caught when we were taking it out of the bag. I will do nightly sweeps with flashlights. We've learned our lessons.

If you decide to get the premium do yourself a favor and tell them to rip the sponges off before shipping. For the life of me I have no idea why they insist on sending all that jazz when it has no chance of making the trip.
They pull it out of the ocean and ship it to you, you want them to rip sponge off each rock that might have it? If you don’t want real liverock with actual organisms on it, buy that purple BS that places sell that’s they call live rock.

There is no benefit to having rock in the sump if there is rock in the display.

There most certainly is. More surface area for micro fauna and bacteria. Cryptic zone. Pod (edit: from pop to pod) population and refuge. Some sumps are designed for this be it refugium or macro algae. Some choose neither and put rock in there.

I am thinking of adding some TBR to my sump since I removed the bio block.
Which would be the best to use? Rubble? And is this a good idea? And how much would you put in the sump of a reefer 350?
Howdy,
Check out the Treasure Chest category, there you will find smaller amounts that ship UPS to your door.
They are the perfect size for sumps, refugiums or nano tanks.
For a dark sump chamber (cryptic zone), I'd order nano base rock or rubble.
For a lit sump chamber (fuge), I'd order nano base, rubble or if you want to grow macros faster order premium.
I'm adding rubble to a canister filter although might add sand to fluidized bed filter. Sand would hold more surface area than rubble which holds more surface area than rocks. Rubble however might bring other life wanted which would fit in a sump application.
If you order rubble specifically for a canister, let us know this in the order notes because we can send the smallest sized rubble.
Also, why is the rubble more expensive than the nano premium? Wouldn’t it be better to just do the nano premium?
And looks like there’s a “20” count minimum, that 20 pounds? Is that too much for the area of my sump, probably a 5 gal section?
Rubble is more expensive because it is very time consuming to harvest.
What’s more beneficial, rock, sand, or a little bit of both?
A Rock and Sand combination is the most beneficial because you receive microorganisms that specifically live in the sand and others that live specifically in rock.
Well I thought about getting the box with both and putting some sand on top of my sand (special grade 3-4 mths old) to maybe help with diatoms and dinos, which aren’t terrible right now, just hoping they stay under control
We've had many customers win the dino battle by adding the Sand & Rox box, all their tanks were 30 gallons and smaller. There are different dinos, so I am not saying it is 100% cure, only that it has worked for some of our customers.
If I'm not mistaken, each of their products are sourced from the same location (or very close). They will all likely have the same bacteria and micro-fauna. What will change is the amount/type of larger fauna. For example, you are VERY UNLIKELY to get macro algae, mantis shrimps, crabs and large sponges with a sand order. You are much MORE likely to get those with the premium live rock.

The premium is more for displays than sumps. So is the sand (which is what I got). If you're putting it in your fuge, I'd go with the rubble. No sense in getting the premium when much of it will die in a sump. You'll get all the bacteria and micro fauna you need from the rubble.

Tagging @LiverockRocks for some more insight. They're always super helpful with deciding between different products :)
Well said.
Dumb question, but are these rocks pest free? Aka, it won't have pests that eat corals, and/or kill my fish (ich/velvet)? Thanks.
We've had the holding system tested many times by AquaBiomics for fish/coral pathogens/diseases. EVERY test has shown 0 of 30+ fish pathogens and 13 coral pathogens. We've never had a customer report ich/velvet/flukes/etc caused by TBS rock or sand. Taking into account that we keep the holding system 100% TBS farmed in the Gulf of Mexico products and the wide temperature range that our farm experiences 45F - 88F, there is little worry your fish will get a disease from TBS.

Unless it's a cryptic zone.

Appreciated the discussion here, all good stuff.
Email if you have specific questions, as we are not on R2R daily.

I have live rock from @Gulf Live Rock - it came with lots of sponge and tunicates. It’s covered in sponges of all kinda of color and most of it made it. The tunicates dies off though.

Most sponges expire when exposed to air and can be by far the most toxic organism living on the rock. All it takes is one to go sitting in 2 gallons of 90 degree water on a tarmac in Jacksonville to start killing everything else. While aesthetically pleasing to some I'm open to hearing all the benefits they provide that outweigh the damage they can do. Even if some do survive the trip who wants invasive sponge taking hold and finding its way into the filtration?

My bad op tell the girls you want extra sponge. I obviously have no idea what I'm talking about.

Would you look at that? 360 pounds of premium rock with no sponge on it. I wonder why Phillipp removed as much as he could? Oh because he knows what he's doing.

Where did you get all that rock from?
I do miss the old days… I started my first tank with Fiji rock straight out of the ocean and picked up at the airport 2 days out of the water

I ended up getting TBS Pico treasure chest for my sump, similar size to Reefer 250. I'm satisfied with the purchase, only minor ugly phase with some diatoms which went away fairly quickly.

This looks like a pretty good option as well…
Did you put the sand in the display?

lol. Lesson in what exactly? I’ve been keeping saltwater tanks for 25 years, not sure what you think you’re going to teach me? Seems like you have your preferred liverock supplier, which isn’t TBS. This thread is about TBS.
