Curious on your perspectives on this. Everywhere I see tilefish listed for sale or their care described (ie Scott W Michaels' books) their recommended tank sizes tend to be about 50 or so gallons. Admittedly having never kept one, they're undoubtedly no small fish and feel like they should be in larger tanks. What would you all say? I love the Purple in particular, but I'm a little hesitant to add one, as I know they can be "anxious" fish and I'd not want to stress one out by not providing a proper setup for it

Honestly, they are like dogs. Once acclimated to your tank they follow you around. They are always next to my hand when working in the tank. You can easily hand feed them. I don't find them skittish at all. A 50 gallon may be too small though. A 4-6' 100-125 gallon would be better.

Very nice. Is that a QT tank? Where will they end up?
I QT’ed them separately and this is their final species-only home. Not pretty at this time & I will build on it but it’s a 48”, 125G filled half way which is what I considered to the ideal home for them. No jumping out concern. Deep sand bed. Scaped to their liking.

Is that in a store or large fish room? That is a good size tank for them

Fish room

they need their room despite the comfy appearance among many of its own species in fish stores. They get stressed out & sick easily.

What size is that chlupatyi?
Something about it doesn't look right to me. Yours looks rather skinny and slightly discoloured but it could be due to the age.
For example, this was mine and it was I believe 2.5-3 inches. P.S. This is him displaying.

They’re growing nicely, the purple tile is my very close second (Chlupatyi will always be my number 1 after having a true specimen).

He is just about 2”. Blind in one eye when i got him & recently survived a freak accident that almost turned him into a fish sausage. I fed food and he chased after a small piece that went towards my UV pump. His head got stuck in there. Luckily I was close by observing how they were eating so I shut off that pump right away to free his head. His head or neck portion was injured but recovered over the next week. I changed out the pump to one that he definitely can’t fit in & got everyone on a kanaplex diet for a week. Now is time to fatten them up.

I will start feeding them metroplex infused foods just in case, even though he already has gone through some api general cure treatments.

Just a warning, H. chluaptyi is extremely sensitive to certain medications such as Copper.
