In retrospect, would you have unpacked the tank and given it a good look over before "signing off" on the freight shipment? Even if the truck driver was trying to get you to sign immediately? Is this not what we should do on any tank?

Does anyone know if there's an option to just refuse a tank if it shows up scratched or damaged (before signing for the freight shipping form, of course?

I'm sorry, I don't mean to post over the OP's thread, but I have been planning on purchasing a larger SC Aquariums tank - basically my *realistic* dream tank - so this thread is of particular interest to me.

Thanks again everyone!
OP can we see the original pics how it arrived?
Just curious

I figure if i can get two more days of fishing booked that would cover the difference of getting a glass cages tank. Not too hopeful seeing as i have never been booked after october 10th, other than this year, just worked yesterday. Slightly short season outhere.
This thread stinks lol! I have been really, really planning on getting an SC Aquariums tank during the expected upcoming Black Friday sale.
If they do a black friday sale that might be a game changer. I am wanting the 150 peninsula which is already on sale, but a little extra off might be a deal maker.

They typically do have a Black Friday sale. Good luck!

You have every right to open it up and inspect it before signing. You’re signing to accept delivery. If you refuse to sign then they aren’t going to leave the package with you, they’ll load it back up and take it back to the warehouse. If there is something wrong you can refuse delivery. If you do this take pictures of what’s wrong and contact the manufacturer or store immediately. I opened the lid of my tank and inspected it before accepting delivery. One thing to keep in mind, they’re usually packed well with styrofoam around them so unless you destroy the packaging or lift the tank out to look at everything, you only get a limited view of things and something like the OP’s issue wouldn’t necessarily be noticed.

Thanks for the reply! That;s kind of why I'm questioning what to do, because I know these tanks come well boxed and warped, making inspection difficult. And, I don't think I would want to completely unwrap the tank as I'd want the protection when we are moving it in the house. And I've just heard stories on impatient drivers that want you to sign off right away, but I'd just tell him not until I'm satisfied the tank is not damaged.

Hello all.

First off @Joe Glass Cages I got a quote from you however the freight was as much as the tank. Now I know nothing about the logistics of freight when it comes to custom tanks, but I do know the logistics of fright with custom windows. Our freight is no where near even half the cost of the windows we build. We have set up partnerships with freight companies that give us a great deal. If I recall you were using fedex which I wouldn't trust with grannies toilet paper from Costco let alone a glass box. If I am ignorant of how it all works I will apologize now, but no way I am paying that much in freight. If I recall out of the 5 quotes I received you were the only one charging 80% of the price of the tank in freight. Again, I may be ignorant but industry standard, at least in glass windows, is 7-15% of the total price of the order. I am open to being educated on the matter.

When the SC tank arrived I was not home. However, my friend who was there took several photos of the box both on the truck and off. When I got home I thoroughly looked over the tank with a very bright shop LED and saw no issues at all. When my friends came over to help put the tank on the stand I still noticed nothing at all of any issue including the area in question.

This separation was not shown until a test fill. The volume of water is what showed the seam. It was not apparent until it was filled with water. I immediately emptied the tank and took photos and contacted Steve. He showed me many photos of "problem" tanks and told me to watch for these things. These "things" were bubbles in the seam and ghosting. I explained, as I have here, it's on the bottom and back of the tank. I can't watch anything. Coupled with the fact it wasn't there until a test fill scared me. Now, the tank has been in full use, gravel, rocks, water for five months before my move. This space is even larger now. And has spread. The tank shows no other issues. I can see silicone in-between the panels but the top layer has moved enough to expose that other silicone. It really just looks like, cosmetic, but has grown larger. Steve told me it was, and I quote, "fine".

I didn't think we were moving so soon so after talking to Steve and others here I decided just to go with it and hope for the best. Now that I am in a home where 90 gallons of water would do serious damage on a new build, I am more hesitant.

I've been dragging my feet filling it back up. I feel like I have really bad luck in this hobby. In everyday life I am the lucky one, I find money on the ground, win free dinners, find an awesome deal on a hard to find car part. In this hobby I get boned, a lot. And usually that is a decent Tuesday morning, but this kind of boning is expensive and annoying.

Interesting side note, it looks like they just changed their website, today actually. On top of that as far as i can tell they just raised the prices on their tanks significantly. So looks like ill be going with glass cages once i can scrape up enough money.
Bummer you were quoted that much for freight. I just went back and forth with them and freight was spendy, but still ends up being more affordable than the new sc aquariums prices. I think freight was roughly 30% of the cost of tank. I too am in the inland northwest. Most affordable shipping was to spokane, 3 hours to the southwest of me.

I got my SCA tanks on Black Friday sales. I can’t remember the exact discount, off the top of my head I think it was 50%. But I also live close enough to do a local pickup.

So I was thinking just now, I should just buy another SC tank. It's the easiest cheapest option. Tried to go to the website, I get a 404 error than it redirects to a billiard store!

When I picked up my tanks at SCA, their warehouse was full of both tanks and billiards tables. If I was you, I’d probably contact Steve, remind him of the situation and the ask him how much he would sell you a new tank for. I bet he will give you a great deal on a new tank.

I was under the impression that the quote from Joe for freight to Spokane was legit made up. In no world could that have been a real quote for freight. Or a typo. I think, hard to remember, I asked if that was legit, and he confirmed. I am open to another quote. I think crystal reef is over in Seattle? There was a reason I didn't go with them and I forget why.

If you have your own freight partners and they give you are a great deal, couldn't you just arrange with Joe and pay to have your own freight guys pick up and deliver?

I could use Saia. My other guys don't go down there.

So weird the SC site is gone. Figures.
Maybe they are setting up for early Black Friday. If you contact him, I wouldn’t be surprised if he gives you at least black Friday discount or even better.

After going through the online quote process I could get a premade glass cage on BRS that's about the same dimensions but smaller for the same price with shipping. Huh, maybe I'll do that, but I would probably go with Waterbox then honestly.
