Has anybody tried the in tank dosage of hydrogen peroxide at 1ml per 10 gallons for nuseince algae I just did like 3 hours of reading and many people who tried it say its 100% reef safe and kills alage. Other people who have not tried it said they would never do it as it would kill coral.
I did in the 75 with no ill effects. In the 125 I tried a couple of times for bubble algae but it didn't do anything so I gave up.

Some reports state it killed all pods, others say pod population exploded after dosing.

I noticed my cloves and xenia it did effect, the polyps got shorter and less fuzzy. Other corals, hammers, frogspawn, were not bothered. Pods were fine. But it didn't help my tank at all.

I'm surprised Fluconazole didn't help, I've done micro doses twice and each time more of the turf algae, and stuff like you're dealing with, died off. It didn't happen in one go, and I still have a few tiny spots of turf, but the fuzzy chitons and lettuce nudis are usually on or around it.

You all made me curious, I check my Alk a couple times a week, weekly for nitrates and phosphates. Haven't checked calcium and magnesium in probably a month, they don't drift.

Mine stays on the higher side
Alk 8.6
470 calcium
1480 magnesium

I have only ran Kalk and done water changes biweekly, started the switch to AFR a few weeks ago, things seem more fluffy.

I also use Instant Ocean Reef Crystals which like @woodyarmadillo says is high from the get go.

Everything is similar to mine except my magnesium likes to stay under 1300.

@SBB Corals I just remembered something I was about to try if these other methods didn't work.

Brightwell Aquatics Hydrat-MG

Raising magnesium is said to help eradicate stubborn algae. But only the Hydrate-MG really works, I read they changed the formulation years ago and changed it back because people were using it for algae control and it stopped working.

Are you dosing mag? I can’t get my mag over 1320ish

Nope never have, when I first set up my tank I was over 1600, still no clue why. My reef crystals, is always 1400 or higher.

Have you checked a fresh batch?
Guess I should try. Well it’s been about 1320-1350 since I started fresh with it. I’ve got a little system and have done some large WC without noticing much of a difference either. What do you test with?

edit to clarify. What test kit are you using. Maybe I will double check with that before I start dosing mag.

I bought a bag and made sure to mix it up good before using too.

I've used Salifert, but it didn't go high enough, so I tried Red Sea, I get the same readings with both test kits now.

So do you think that Brightwell hydrat-mg would be a good product for me to use to get my mag up? I’m also dealing with some stubborn hair algae but not like what Shane has going on in that one tank.

You could, that's what it's actually used for, the algae control is just a side effect. To help with algae most of what I have read is keeping magnesium 1600, but you have to be careful because it can effect your inverts.

Once you get it cleared, knowing the root cause of the algae problem, high nutrients or whatever, will help keep it from coming back.

Here's an article about it, you can search and find a lot more. It's supposed to work on a lot of different types of algae.

Awesome thanks! Read the article sounds like a good plan. In the article they have mag up to 1500 and that took care of Bryopsis. I’ll give it a shot!

I used hydrate-mg and raised my level to 1590 for a month for bryopsis but it didnt work. I used Reef flux and that knocked out the bryopsis and little bit of gha i had.

It's a long road, I just searched on here and it can take weeks to see a change.

Fluconazole works fairly quick in most cases taking care of algae issues. But since you want to raise your magnesium anyways it would be worth a try with it.

Well you was 10 too low that's why! :upside-down-face:

Nah, thanks really, it's interesting to see what seems to work for some and doesn't for others, just like Fluconazole.

I've read some people push it to 1800, if I didn't have a tank full of inverts, I might try that if I had another outbreak. For science of course...lol

I didnt want to go any higher than 1590 because even at 1590 all my snails were ticked.
