I use a jebao variable DC pump and prefer them, cheap and been reliable for years.

I also have a Sicce pump, they are well built and reliable but run hot, raising the tank temperature.

Whatever brand, for a return pump I would recommend a DC pump so you can dial in the flow rate and match the overflow without valves on the return line.
Valves and unions everywhere! :zany-face:

What are you guys using for return pumps? I'm looking to get a new one soon and use the one I currently have as backup
Does the one you are running now suit your needs? If so, if ain't broke don't fix it and get a new one of those. Same plumbing, size, fit, cord length, drains are already set up for the flow, etc...

Now if you want to go with a different pump to gain different features (contrallability, noise reduction, additional flow to drive a manifold, etc..) then what are you looking for. This could help narrow down a selection.

For me, I wanted a DC pump for noise reduction but also needed enough to push 750 gph through 12 feet of head pressure and a manifold to my UV and stay around 50% power to try and extend pump life. This lead me to the Sicce SDC 9.0 for the living room tank.

New tank is in the bedroom so I want it as quiet as possible. Tank is a Waterbox AIO 65.4 with only about 2 feet of head pressure and only needs to push about 300 gph. I chose the ReefOcto VarioS-2 for this tank.

I agree the DC pumps are definitely quieter.

There was nothing wrong with the one I currently use. It's a little louder than I'd like it to be, but is not that big of an issue at the moment, main reason to try and get a second one is just in case one fails, that way I'm not rushing and jumping onto the first pump I see to try and get the system running back up lol

You can....if you want to have a backup that maybe gets used in 5-10 years lol. I would say by the time you need it you probably will have a bigger tank and need a bigger pump...Amazon can deliver in a day or two.
