I started a salt water reef tank on 4/11/2022. I've learned so much. I've had my ups and downs. I've spent more money that I thought I would. I've tried several different things some worked some were a waste. My reef tank looked great six months ago, than I had an algae problem no one could identify and all hell broke loose.(see my other posts). I came though that problem and my tank looks good. I have enjoyed the hobby and glad I did it... most days...lol.....My question is there a point in time if I don't add anything to the tank and keep my water perimeter in range. My tank should go on autopilot or at some point will it be one **** show after another. thanks.........Looking forward to others input.

All reef systems will achieve a certain level, or degree if you will, of self sustainability. Home systems are unlikely to ever achieve full self-sustainability. The length of time at which you can go without water changes, the stability in your tank, etc. is all related to husbandry and maturity.

How stable your aquarium is, and how well it develops, depends on you and the degree at which you can keep it stable with regular testing and water changing. As aquariums mature, things get easier and more stable, but problems don't go away unless you fix them. There is also a lot to be said about the experience you will gain, that will eventually lead to you avoiding problems without knowing it.

After a good while of smooth sailing, things will continue to improve from there. Do be sure to fix problems rather than use band-aids such as algae fix solutions and 'more clean up crew'
