I would reccomend testing your setup for what happens in power outage. That flapper style check valve worries me. Sometimes, they can do a gargling movement thatallows it to continue a siphon from the tank to the refugium. I would suggest a weep hole inthe return line, just at or below your water level in the tank. Then, while pumpong, it is no factor, but in a power outage, it breaks siphon so that it cannot keep siphoning water out of the tank.

The check valve is a just in case . I have a hole in my return spout for syphon break. Thanks for checking though.

In my fuge I rubble pieces of rock and quite a bit as well. I got a bunch of little stuff from under the tables at aquatic marine. As far as my reactors they are both plumbed in on the skimmer side of the sump . I use 2 cups in each reactor. Both are phosban units. My light is a w____mart light clamp style with energy saver bulb and I have never turned it off.

Ok I changed my lighting schedule on the fuge to on at 5pm and off at 9am. So 18 on and 6 off now.

About placement of the GFO/carbon...I don't think it matters where you put it as long as it takes water in somewhere where there's decent flow and outputs where there's decent flow. I have one of the Phosban reactors (the big one) and I love it.
