The new Hamilton 20k was formulated to look like Radium 20k to be used on a "normal" 250w ballast instead of m80. This was done with purpose. The new Hammy 20k does look very nice in every SE wattage. I have some of the new Hammy 20k - if they can be driven on m80 and some of the things in the works never come to light, then there is your Radium 20k replacement. I have not tried to drive them on m80.

Are there any coral farms or public aquariums that still use halides?

That might be the best way to keep them available on the market. The ones that I am aware of all use LED now, they probably consume more lighting than the hobbyists and if support was moved towards growers that continue to use MH it would probably increase demand.

This debate will always rage with lights until LEDs offer what MH and some T5 do. There are spectrum outside of the visible range that appear to matter - the more that a LED user looks into this, the more that the see it - the debate then switches to "making sacrifices" instead of "they are the same" which is where actual productive debate can happen.
Need to pick a nit here.. T5's, except for "diffusion" have little outside an LED spectrum.
Actual measurements include:
While doing the analysis for the T5s, I'm seeing something similar. Blue Plus barely has any UV./
Not sure of the >800nm IR but my assUme-tion is also a negative.

Since most things in life work on a "average" so to speak any real specific nm rangelike 390-395 would be extremely odd to find.

This is funny. My daughter wanted and got a cassette player for her birthday this past year and goes thrift shopping for old tapes. I just thought it was weird but didn't realize it was a new popular thing till this thread.

I WANT MY CASSETTE TAPES BACK!!

You know, they were the best selling way to listen to music for years ;)
No! You can't have cassette tapes anymore or try to find them. Stop and accept this. You must MOVE on...and you must listen to me rant about moving on in a thread not about moving on...:beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

@jda Does hamilton still produce the 20k SE bulbs? Or is what on their site just last of remaining inventory?

I love the analog/digital debate, as well as having something just to have it. Anybody care to know what the vinyl record in my signature photo is worth now just for somebody that wants to hold and touch it - doubtful anybody would ever play it?

That's a very old, tired jab.

It is not nothing. Having experience does matter. Only those without it don't see it as a problem. However, sometimes the dude is helpful so you have to look past the contrarian stuff or just ignore it - does not seem like any purposeful malice is there, just maybe a larger lack of self awareness that all of us suffer from at times. You see, data is worthless. Information is good, but it takes actual experiences to turn data into information. Knowledge is even better, but you need to collaborate with others with experience and information by both challenging and supporting each other. You cannot do the two most important things without actual experiences. You are just stuck with talking about other peoples experiences which is akin to guessing - you are kinda like Will Hunting when Robin Williams gives him the "you don't know anything" speech on the park bench... and is right.

Now that's funny.
Opps wrong person to reply to.. My bad.

Add a disclaimer for Redoubtreef and jda.
See sig.

Anyways the thing is a "coral" is not an animal alone or an animal/plant but an animal/plant (multiple types) bacteria, viruses and a weird crystalline physical structure.
An ecosystem inside an ecosystem.

Very interesting and frankly more unknowns than knowns.
Including light.

To be honest I probably spent more time rehashing new and old data than almost anyone.
Now there is theory and there is practice. No doubt there.

I certainly don't nor hopefully never implied what works "best". Just what is "possible".
Tested or not.

Like the Iwasaki 6500k. Historically well proven but currently.. few LIKE the color. Nothing wrong with that.
It is just a fact. So no matter how GREAT it is well answer that yourself...

Experience or not all 3 "forms" grow "stuff". Want to split hairs on some points.. fine.

That Radium bulbs, just like cassete tapes, will not be produced anymore. They were at one point the peak of technology and widely used. They are now outdated technology, that is still used by some.

I used halides. They were good. I don't think they grew coral any better than the led/t5 combo I use now. I will say, the color was more appealing to the eye, and much easier to take pictures with than the led lights.

But why do MH users get in such a "get off my lawn" rant and attitude whenever someone says LED grow coral just as well as halides?
Vinyl records also became obsolete…. until they weren’t. People can’t get enough now. Same with reel to reel tape players. That’s just for starters.

There’s a place for LEDs. There really is. The trash can for one. The junkyard is another. Ok ok in all seriousness LEDs save on the electric bill and last a decade. But really they don’t. I know this because I can do maths.

Which saves more money? 1000 watts of T5 and LEDs that cost $1,000 up front and last maybe 5 years if you’re lucky, or $500 worth of halides which also warm the tank just enough to keep it ~80 degrees while they’re on, keeping your heaters off by day?

True, the lamps need to be replaced once every two years but the fixtures will last indefinitely. In the 5 years your LEDs last I’ve saved money because my electric bill is less than yours since your heaters also have to run day and night whereas mine don’t.

I don’t want this to be a debate but you need to understand this. They know they can’t safely make halides as cheaply as they make LEDs because if they did there’d be explosions everywhere.

Now they can lure the gullible in with promises of 10 years of life, more efficiency, etc. They just don’t tell you that to get 10 years out of them you have to use them at half brightness and you can only use them every other day. Don’t believe the hype. LEDs cost far less to make than halides but because LEDs are “eco friendly”, they charge you more. And since they break more often, you’ll pony up much more often.

Trust me. People still want halides. More in fact every day. Because these companies want to cheat you however, they use these deceptive tactics. “Eco Friendly”, those two words mean made as cheaply as possible, and priced 10 times higher than they should ever cost. No thanks.
