The new Hamilton 20k was formulated to look like Radium 20k to be used on a "normal" 250w ballast instead of m80. This was done with purpose. The new Hammy 20k does look very nice in every SE wattage. I have some of the new Hammy 20k - if they can be driven on m80 and some of the things in the works never come to light, then there is your Radium 20k replacement. I have not tried to drive them on m80.
Are they going to make DE lamps again?

Supposedly. I do believe them, but I also want to see them. My main worry is that the economy will turn and with the hobby already in decline, things in the works with good intentions will not all finish.

Call and talk to them. They seemed to indicate that they appreciate the calls and that shows support for their products. They are easy to reach and talk to.

Thank you. That’s great to hear!

Are there any coral farms or public aquariums that still use halides?

I'm sure there are.

My wife just weighed in. She thinks there's one good argument in support of halides. A lot of the Chinese black box LEDs are likely not what they advertise. Having measured the power consumption of multiple Chinese-made LED products, I can say that she has a valid point. I had one black box reef LED system that was advertised at 3 watts per LED; it only used 2 per. I've measured "300 watt" plant LEDs that actually use 145 watts, an LED light bar for my car was advertised as 250 watts. Based on the amperage measured, it was around 150 watts.

That said, I've measured all of my name brand reef LEDs, and they're all as advertised.

Now when it comes to halides, you can guarantee that a 250W bulb uses every bit of 250 watts, plus whatever the ballast uses.

I'm surprised none of you suggested a massive group buy and work out the distribution issue amongst yourselves.

I’ll take my 250 watts and whatever the ballast uses because my corals, clams, and nems will be healthier, and I won’t have to buy or rent a PAR meter.

That's waaaaay too red.
Actually "according to Dana" red should be kept under 30% of PAR.
The red part is part of the mystery..

Post it in the diy forum I can help! I do acrylic for a living..
I already know what I'm planning to do, and I even got some advice from Robbie Redneck. Thanks anyway. If I post in the DIY forum it will be the entire build process and the inevitable tank explosion/fail.

I got one for fun! Halides is where it’s at! Those numbers are 12” down in the water column I hit over 1000 at the water line.
