I live on the outer banks of North Carolina. The odor from my aquarium filtration smells just like the fragrance from the wetlands behind my house when the warm southwest wind blows. If anyone complains, I explain it's mother nature at work and not my aquarium!

If you use activated carbon, be sure it is high grade, and you could probably place it in a bag in the skimmer cup or on top of the reef mat to avoid contact with the water. The KLIR system has carbon in the lid. I just built a reefmat via 3D printer. Still considering if I want to fight the odor that occurs from time to time.

So I threw in a 11oz bag of chemo blue. I forgot I had the Red Sea activated carbon that came with the reef mat, so that’s there too. I also put a foam activated carbon mat on top of the skimmer. So far, I still smell the tank around the house on the first floor. I did just replace my air cleaner filter, so hoping that will help.

If you keep a few large anemones, they make the water have a funky smell.
