Hey all,

[See pic at bottom, but hear me out before you call ich]

I recently got a Captive Bred Snark Nose Goby. When he first arrived on 3/28 his gills where very inflamed. I was actually doubtful he would survive the night.

I put him in QT with a Midas Blenny, yellow watchman, and a Purple Fire Fish. In the past few days I've noticed that although the gill redness and inflammation have subsided, he is developing white spots along his body and fins.

He is still actively swimming and eating and none of the other fish, who have been in the QT tank almost two weeks longer, show any signs of spots. (I know the thicker slim coat makes some species resist to body infection but still prone to gill infections.)

I have experience with ich and have successfully treated and eradicated it before with a .5mg/l dose of copper and two months fallow. I am terrified of reintroducing it to the tank.

However, I am becoming slightly skeptcical of my original ich diagnosis. I have come across posts by other snark nose goby owners who claim to be dealing with a similar ich like issue. (I'd link them but I can't remember where I found them. Will try to follow up when I am not on mobile)

Does anyone know an ich look alike disease unique to shark nose and neon gobies. I am fairly certain Velvet would have wiped out the whole QT tank if that was the affliction. Also the other fish seem happy and healthy (or as much as they can in a boring QT tank).

Last night I freshwater dipped him for 5 minutes. Although I prepped the temperature and pH to match the QT water, it clearly stressed him, which I didn't expect because he took his arrival fw dip like a champ. In addition, it seems to have had no impact on the number of spots.

In the past, my FW dips on clowns and Grammas (I know, Grammas hate the FW dips) has immediately decreased the number of ich cysts and provided quick relief.

I keep the QT tank around Hypo 1.021 as best I can; sometimes it raises due to evaporation.

I also treat it with about half the recommended copper dosage, about .25 or .3ml / liter. (The test kits are borderline impossible to read at such a low dosage)

This should be enough to starve off an ich infection, right??? So what would be continuing to affect him? And seemingly getting worse! :(

I have an array of medications, but only one QT tank, and I am very unsure about which fish can handle which medications and at what levels. Recap of inhabitants: yellow watchman, Midas blenny, purple firefish, sharknose goby.

Any insights would be much appreciated. Am I ignoring the obvious, or is this something more unusual?

I try to never give up on a fish, even the smallest damsel. But unless I can figure out what's affecting him, he doesn't stand a chance.

Thank you in advance for any insights, even guesses help. This has been a really great and helpful community, and has made the hobby immensely more satisfying and fun.

Cheers!

The picture on this end is a bit fuzzy. When you did the FW dip, did you see any sesame seed like things in the bottom of the container? Thinking perhaps flukes. The other thought is possible lympho. Are the white spots raised a bit and cottony or cauliflower like?

Have you recently done a FW dip? To check for flukes?

If it's not flukes it could very well be ich. You likely wouldn't see ich show up that heavily on a fish in a QT that is dosed with sub-therapeutic copper.

This is why I am leaning towards flukes.

Just to update this thread, I did two more fresh water dips, slightly increased copper, and the fish now looks free of all spots and disease.

I think it may have been lympho.
