On a serious note...I noticed whatever Andrew's sps( a little broken piece somebody gave him ) is really growing. Suddenly. Like his other 2. Is it normal to see big growth spurts and then a more dormant period?

Yes, something was better at the growth spurt?
The tricky part is thinking back, take more pics, even if it is just for your own reference, it will be date stamped on your phone.
What made it good then and then what made it tail off again?
... take a breath!
Mine is probably the most in person observed tank in the world!
If you don't want to use a "system" but want a system that works for you, observation and slow changes!
I get home from work at 4- 30 ish, within 30 seconds of giving the tanks a quick scan I will notice changes in the mood of the tanks!
Get a feel for them, I will have corals sulk for days at a time for no apparent reason, I never react quickly unless there is physical damage.
I don't get out much, apart from my girlie the tanks get my full and undivided! ;)
