Take the surface area of your tank (length x width) and divide it by the surface area of your sump (length x width) and that gives you the inches required empty in your sump per 1 inch that your display drains when power is shut off.

With that said, I do it the way @Reefering1 does. I fill the sump through the display once the plumbing is in place and stop filling when the sump is at my "comfort level". Also, leave some extra room for ATO malfunctions as a just-in-case.

I would say the sump listed will work fine BUT I'd leave a minimum of 5" empty. If you're planning on running a skimmer, you'll need a stand if you run it at 15" depth of water so I'd go closer to 12" and use a 3" tall stand for the skimmer to get it at 9" skimmer depth. If you're running a Fuge, I'd run it at 14"-15" depth.

See, that right there, the math part. I get all cross eyed.

Seeing is believing so I'll try door number 2!

Advertised as the "refugium" type sump and lists the water level fixed at 13". Unless I contact them and ask for an adjustable baffle which is possible I've seen it on other configurations they offer.

This one then. Should be perfect but you may have to raise your skimmer 4"-5" if you run one to get at the 8"-9" depth.

First time with a sump SO I HAVE NO IDEER! Plumbing not set up yet, sump tank still bare, but trying to decide if the above kit will work in my situation before buying it.
I'm with you!! I've got to set mine up and have no idea either. No idea what drilling a siphon break is! Not even sure what a siphon is (my guess is that it's continued suction of water even when the pumps turn off).

Yes. Drill an 1/8" hole in the return pipe just below the running water level so when the return pump shuts off, it grabs air and stops sucking water from the tank.

Still confused... Running water level in the sump?

I realize after pasting that last photo that it's ridiculous.

In the sump water level, if the pump cuts off, then doesn't the water level in the sump go up overall? How would the hole grab air if it is submerged?

Now I'm realizing that I might be thinking about the wrong pipes. This one?

Wouldn't a hole in this pipe just shoot water out of it and reduce the pressure of water returning to the tank?

That sump looks funny. Doesn’t seem to have enough water in the return chamber. Probably sucking air already ;)

On a serious note though doesn’t the water level rise in the sump when the pump cuts off? So drilling a 1/8 hole below running water level would not suck air?

A hole that small I don’t think would cause to much of a disruption in the flow to the tank

The hole would be just above the water line in the display, pointing down so it doesn't squirt water out the tank while running. And big enough that enough air goes in the break the siphon. Alternatively, you can just keep the outlet itself at the very surface.

You don’t need it if the outlets for the return pump are about level with the water in your DT. However if there is one (or two but both) loop a few inches below the water line of the DT you will want to drill. I’ve only had this issue on tanks that didn’t have an internal pipe for the return.

make sense?
