I don’t mind the cold. But even I will admit last night was brutal. Crazy windy. Ambient temp in the 20s before wind chill factored in.

The Shining GIF
The wind was weird in our area, it felt like being struck with needles. It was very prickly.

I have a metal cage in my back, knee replacement, screws in various places and most of my left side was shattered at one point. I do not like the cold lol. It was 25 last night and I never even looked outside lol.
Those are some dang fine reasons to not like the cold!
It’s +2 here now so it’ll all be gone by the end of the day.
the first snow is always very pretty……and then there’s February:(

Morning/Afternoon All.
I've got 20 pages to catch up on while I work today. I think Frank got the new tanks up but not sure., I know its cold up in Canada and E_S should defiantly stay away from the cold!!
Good working weekend for me on the tanks. Spent hours brushing the teeth in both displays to remove GHA and tanks look much better.

that is why I am building a air exchange tower and sulfur and arrgonite dual chamber reactor for the 300.
waiting for the 4 pounds of sulfur to get here...and 10 pounds of arrgonite

Soren: (LRT I hope this helps you also )
First please understand I am sharing this info as I learn info in this hobby...
my guess is nitrates did add a little to the problem, but it was more of lack of free oxygen levels to support the fish. in general, algae / seaweed etc absorb CO2 and expel O2(oxygen) during sunlight/light day cycle BUT at night(dark cycle) the process is reversed, they absorb O2(oxygen) and expel CO2..(a food source for Dinos)
So O2 levels can get really low so that is why(my guess) you woke up and found the tang dead as do most of us, we wake up and find a dead fish..lack of free O2 in the tank at night decreases exponentially if the refug is off at night.
I Built a air exchange tower to help increase free O2 for the 300.
ALSO I JUST MODIFIED MY 300 SUMP DESIGN AND REMOVED THE STAND ALONG REFUG FOR THIS REASON, HERE IS WHY, again this is only my guess from what I been reading and learning from all the great minds I have been chatting with or reading their articles.
It seems normal practice is to have the refugium light come on during night hours when our tank lights are off, and yes I was planning this practice also. I have heard some people running the refug during the day, which is good but the process still does what I feel is my guess here as follows.
So when the refugium light is on , and the chaeto or what ever you have in the refug is consuming CO2 and absorbing nitrates/PO4 etc, this process will contribute to increase O2 levels in the tank and can cause your nitrates and PO4 to bottom out if not watched.

The refug is producing CO2 which is a food source for Dino's when the light is off.

So for me, I am just going to avoid this mess of a cycle and not have refug on the 300.
I build a air exchange tower and a sulfur/arrgonite reactor to have more control over O2 and nitrate levels. Yes the sulfur reactor will take a little time to dial in and and I will have to monitor and control ALK and PH but thats wht my GHL is for. I would rater deal with that then the whole lack of O2 and dino/ algae problems....
Ah my cofffes is ready....
I can show you pic of my O2 tower and reactors if you want. I made them from used equipment I bought. Saved cash. I build my sulfur reactor dual tower for $135.00
coffee time

for some strange reason, I cant attach pic to my reply yo you LRT,Soren.
so i had to do this reply
Thanks for this information, @1ocean ! I am looking for ways to increase oxygenation, especially since I am concerned with available oxygen in my basement.

February Is always bleak
Ha, February birthday here, so it is one of my favorite months! I also still love snow and cold, though owning a home has broadened my understanding of those who don't. I'll also likely understand more as I get older.

Hi everyone! I’ve been doing a lot of research lately about running activated carbon and it’s potential to cause HLLE is blue hippo tangs. It seems to be a pretty controversial idea, so I wanted to hear some more opinions/experiences.

The reason I’m asking is because I bought a baby blue hippo tang about four months ago from my LFS. It ended up having a fungus infection that I noticed once I was home, so I ended up switching it out for a new one. I was told that a 20 gallon would be okay for it for up two years, and to feed it pellets and flakes. It began to develop HLLE within about a month of having it, so I began researching possible causes. I quickly concluded that it was malnourished, due to not being fed seaweed, and began feeding red nori daily, as well as, herbivore formulated pellets and occasional live baby brine shrimp. However, it’s possible that the condition was caused from poor conditions/stress at the LFS, on top of the stress of being moved to, yet, another new tank. Or even the two combined. Recently, I’ve been reading that some people believe activated carbon is to blame. I can’t see activated carbon being the sole cause of the condition, but I am curious as to the possibility of it causing additional stress by removing essential vitamins/minerals from the water. I would like the tang’s condition to improve, and for it to be as happy, and healthy, as possible. So, what do y’all think?

A note for the Tang Police:
If I can not improve its condition, as well as, move it to a larger tank within year, I will give it away to someone who can take better care of it. ‘‘Twas a mistake on my part and I’ve learned my lesson. No need for citations this time.
