Simon ,not seeing pics yet ? still working on laptop ?

It's complicated, the piece of software I use is an older bit of windows software that is discontinued but if I can find the right version I should be able to install it, just about to try again. ;)

Not sure about toxicity and harming tang or anything but can tell you I just had to get rid of my porcupine puffer for same reason. Sky high nitrates bottoming out phosphates wreaking dino havoc in one of my tanks. All I can say is I've noticed the grumpy old tang has really perked up since I started scrubbing nitrates and removing them. Dinos is going away as well.
Soren: (LRT I hope this helps you also )
First please understand I am sharing this info as I learn info in this hobby...
my guess is nitrates did add a little to the problem, but it was more of lack of free oxygen levels to support the fish. in general, algae / seaweed etc absorb CO2 and expel O2(oxygen) during sunlight/light day cycle BUT at night(dark cycle) the process is reversed, they absorb O2(oxygen) and expel CO2..(a food source for Dinos)
So O2 levels can get really low so that is why(my guess) you woke up and found the tang dead as do most of us, we wake up and find a dead fish..lack of free O2 in the tank at night decreases exponentially if the refug is off at night.
I Built a air exchange tower to help increase free O2 for the 300.
ALSO I JUST MODIFIED MY 300 SUMP DESIGN AND REMOVED THE STAND ALONG REFUG FOR THIS REASON, HERE IS WHY, again this is only my guess from what I been reading and learning from all the great minds I have been chatting with or reading their articles.
It seems normal practice is to have the refugium light come on during night hours when our tank lights are off, and yes I was planning this practice also. I have heard some people running the refug during the day, which is good but the process still does what I feel is my guess here as follows.
So when the refugium light is on , and the chaeto or what ever you have in the refug is consuming CO2 and absorbing nitrates/PO4 etc, this process will contribute to increase O2 levels in the tank and can cause your nitrates and PO4 to bottom out if not watched.

The refug is producing CO2 which is a food source for Dino's when the light is off.

So for me, I am just going to avoid this mess of a cycle and not have refug on the 300.
I build a air exchange tower and a sulfur/arrgonite reactor to have more control over O2 and nitrate levels. Yes the sulfur reactor will take a little time to dial in and and I will have to monitor and control ALK and PH but thats wht my GHL is for. I would rater deal with that then the whole lack of O2 and dino/ algae problems....
Ah my cofffes is ready....
I can show you pic of my O2 tower and reactors if you want. I made them from used equipment I bought. Saved cash. I build my sulfur reactor dual tower for $135.00
coffee time

GM (Good Morning) everyone,
Coffee time and we did score two 3" plus yellow tangs yesterday and introduced them to the Hawaii yellow tang we had for over 2 years in the 140.
As you know we were going to sell him, but after talking to all of you, we took your advice ( THANKS FISHGUY )and went and purchased 2 yellow tangs to make 3...as we were told it is either 1 or 3 but never 2 cause they fight..
Yes it was costly BUT the local fish store is doing a food drive and if you bring in 5 items of can or boxed food they will give you 20% off your entire fish purchase.
SO we brought 15 cans of food, boxes of pasta and a case of ramen noodles. They have a specific list and these were on the list and it is for a good cause.
Plus we got 20% off the high ban price of yellow tangs...
All is good, we moved them all to the 300 last night along with the purple, blonde naso, blue hippo, tomini and power blue.
8 tangs total and they are all cool this morning...3 yellows swim in a school...
ah coffee
