My previous tanks have been hit by ich numerous times in the past, so I've always been keen on watching my fish.

My 80g tank right now is pretty empty after my Blue Throat Trigger took a jump, and I sold my Yellow Tang because he was the reason the trigger jumped in the first place (bully) - So I am left with 2 clowns, 3 chromis and my Melanurus.

Here's the thing - I'm getting a 20L or 40B to finally setup a QT Tank, and will only be going through places that actually care for their fish (Like Divers Den) ... but before I go through all that trouble and money to get good fish, and QT them ... I'm worried what may be wrong with my Melanurus.

Ever since I got him (probably 2 months ago now), I've seen him scratching on the rocks. Sometimes, he scratches a lot. I look at him closely and I never see anything visible on him though, and my other fish never show anything either. He's basically been the only one who's ever scratched.

I'm just wondering if you have any ideas what it could be? Water chemistry is good. I've considered catching him and putting him through a QT once I get it going, but he's already skittish so I really don't want to chase him around (Especially since the sign of a net and he burrows into the sand) and stress him out if it isn't a smart thing to do.

I also wouldn't know what to even treat the QT with if I were to catch him, since I have no idea what is wrong?

My Bartlett's anthias used to scratch a lot too. I noticed that excessive bubbles from my HOB filter seemed to make them itchy, so I turned it down and they've done better since.

It may also be that there's something in your water he's sensitive to, even if the params are good. Try some extra water changes. Otherwise, if he's acting healthy, I wouldn't bother him.

Scratching how? Is he rubbing the length of his body alongside objects, or is it a quick "flick" off of things, almost like he's "bouncing" off of them?
