My buddy doesn't do them either and has a gorgeous tank. Just gotta put back nutrients one way or another.

i do them but very seldom. I do dose all the trace elements back into the tank. I can’t keep nitrates up … and a water change would put me at 0 or to close for comfort. Dinos are no fun

Everyone has an ugly stage don't let it scare you from the hobby. Just have patience and get a good clean up crew.

Do your research about every aspect of what you want for the end goal

Don’t buy a small tank to start. Smaller tanks are so much harder to keep parameters under control and….you’re going to want more.

So. Just get a ’big’ tank (not a nano).

You are going to get a million different answers if you ask a question to a group. Find a couple mentors and see what works best for your tank.

Be prepared to fall in love and forget about your bank account.
