Hi all.
My son and I are building ourselves a 7ft lagoon style reef tank. I have been absent in the reef keeping hobby for a few years due to career and travel requirements. I was also separated from my family for a year as I began work in a new country and now 1 year later they have all joined me in Abu Dhabi. So what better time than this for us to begin a reeftank project together. The goal is really to build a nice simple but neat system which does not have much automation, this way I get to teach Kaylem as much about marine biology and husbandry as possible.

We received the stand and base board a few days ago and the glass for the display, sump, ATO and quarantine tanks will be delivered this evening. This means we can really get started with our building work, in fact a have a few assembly brackets printing right now. The plan is to get the tanks built, scaped and circulating in the next 3 weeks. After that we have a bit of traveling to do so while we are away the tank can circulate without lights or a skimmer and when we return we can start tracking water quality daily then get the other components installed and running as required. We are in no rush at all but I expect that by the second week of October we should put our first livestock into QT which will be snails and hermits and a few Anthias.

We are targeting a select group of tangs and angels with some anthias and two sets of percular clowns. I am a very experienced fish keeper but I would consider myself very much an experienced novice with keeping corals. So in general I'm a fish guy, specifically rarer fish and angels. But with this tank I would like to keep some acropora and montipora when we feel that we have stable water so likely between months 8-14 ish, but we will see how that goes.

After months of research we have decided to use:
Hydor ESK 1000 skimmer
Jebao EP3500 DC controllable return pump
Magtool ATO
Magtool Gyer crossflow pumps for display tank circulation (multiple pumps)
Durags water quality meter system
Noopsyche NP K7 Pro 3 lights, we will have 3 rock formations with one light over each rock formation
Magtool 800watt dual element heater
We will use IQuatics dry rock which we will use to piece together our scaping
Our substrate will be 80% aragonite with some carefully selected local live crushed coral from the region (200km away from city) We will also use some live sand (smaller particle size) for our in sump DSB.
I have never yet used Fritz Turbo Start 900 (in general I'm not a guy who believes in starting with externally dosed bacteria) but we will give this a go more for the educational aspect than anything else.

Unfortunately we do not have much space available and we have been forced to house our QT tank next to the sump and inside the display tank stand. This is not ideal as pathogens and parasites can potentially be transferred over. But we just have no other option so to mitigate this we will be building a overhang lip lid over both the QT tank and sump tanks, then also I will have a divider panel between the two. I think that with these measure and briefing everyone in the house about how important it is to keep these two sources of water completely separate we should be ok.

As for the reefkeeping environment in the UAE, well its pretty much ok. From what I've seen so far its possible to create a long term sustainable system which was the first consideration I had months ago. From a quality of livestock point of view, again its doable with strict quarantining practices. The quality of coral is actually very good, the fish quality is average though.
Often people comment about the extreme heat in the middle East, and while this is a factor its actually a very small factor. The fact is that most buildings are extremely well temperature controlled between 22 and 26degC (72-78F)so while it can be over 50degC (122F) outside you really don't need to bare those temps for more than a minute when walking from a building to your vehicle for example. In fact we are going through what I think is our final heat spike for this summer and yesterday the temperature measure 53degC (127F) in my car at 4pm when I left the airport. I would guess that would mean an measurable high of +-49 degC (120F) for the day. So its very hot but we are very much protected from the heat. This means no need for chillers and I suspect that the heater will see very little use in a daily cycle.

I think that's a fairly detailed report on what we have planned, now we need to execute this and we will post some pictures of the process as we go along.

Best Regards Trevor

Interesting dimensions, any reason why so short front to back? The tank that I'm building is 79x39x16"
Yeah, its to fit the space we have available in our dining room area.

The initial idea was to build a 35x35 inch cube tank which we would fit in a corner between two sofas but then I just knew that I would miss having bigger fish.

So I sold the family on a plan to pull the dining room table away from the wall it buts up against, creating a space between it and the wall and then put a long tank there which would basically be an T extension of the dining room table. Moving the table impacted on walk through space from the other side so when we all agreed that the walk through space was acceptable we measured the gap between the table and the wall and that is where the 22 inches came from.

Last night our glass was delivered, Kaylem and I worked hard to carry around 300lbs of glass up the stairs.
It arrived a few hours late so there was no time to start prepping any of the panels. I did get our RO machine installed though which was also delivered last night. It will take us a good few days to prep the panels and start bonding. I think we should start with the 3 smaller tanks but by middle of next week we should be done with the glass box building. I also ordered the wood for the cladding of the frame yesterday. So we are gaining some momentum after months of planning :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:

Very cool. I’m starting the planning phase for my final tank. We start building our home next spring and I need to figure out the dimensions. I was thinking a 6-8’ x 24-30” x 16”. So I’ll be eagerly watching this.

We have finalized our fish list which will be:
Emperor angel
Blue ring angel
Dispar Anthias x 8
Gem tang
Scopas tang
Blue tang
Yellow tang
Powder blue tang
Achilles tang
Percular clown fish x 2
Gold stripe gobie
Copperband butterfly

Possible changes, I would love to keep a foxface but this would need to be traded out for the yellow tang, another possibility would be trading the scopas for a black tang. Although I much prefer the scopas tang as it offers more definition and color variation than a black tang but this applies to premium scopas tangs with dark dense base color. So if we cant find a dense color scopas specimen then it will be a change to the black tang.

Alot of these fish grow too large for your size tank - especially the 2 angels, and blue tang. Some angels that would fit in these size tank would be a regal, any of the genicanthus angels and a majestic angelfish. I wouldn't keep a powder blue and an achilles toghether as they are both very aggressive and will likely rip eachother to shreds. The black tang would likely be a bit too large. I think you can keep both the foxface and the yellow tang if you wanted to.

Those tank dimensions sound pretty neat. I’m curious to see how it turns out.

For the fish - I hate to be that guy, but your tank is too small for many of the fish on your list. I would rethink the angels, powder blue, blue tang and Achilles tang. They will get too big/aggressive for your tank. Achilles require a large tank with a lot of flow.

You could try a one spot fox face since they stay smaller than a regular fox face.

Anthias are tough to keep imo. They require a lot of feedings throughout the day. Over never had a lot of luck with them. Tried several times.

with around 140 gallons of volume and 7 feet I think a powder blue would be alright.

Thanks for the advice, other than the black tang I have kept all of these fish previously and this is almost an identical copy of a tank we had about 15 years back. We will keep all the tangs from small size and trade them out when they reach large size for small size again. This gives us around 3-4 years before we look at replacing fish due to size.

Thanks for the concern, with over 20 years of fish keeping experience I believe I know what I'm doing here and with a plan.

I wouldn't agree ether that anthias are hard to keep but they are very inconsistent in tanks. Some will thrive for many years and some for only a year. I have never tried to understand why this was the case but at this time I'm cautiously going to try these fish again, they will be the first additions in a few months.

My concern on the powder blue would be aggression. They can get pretty nasty once they get big.

Yeah indeed they can but there are way to mitigate all of this and then even still it cannot work out. I am prepared for that if we end up in that situation.

I went back and found some pics of my similar tank many years ago except this was a FO tank and I was surprised to find that we actually kept two Powderblues and an Achilles tang together in this tank.

Started building boxes, I'm starting the smallest, ATO box. It's been many many years since I last build a tank and that's clear as I made a few mistakes mostly with the order of how I did the caulking. This resulted in less neatness than I was aiming for. So I'm very happy with my plan but I need to sharpen my skills before tackling the display tank

The QT tank is assembled. Much much better result and now I'm starting to get happy. But that's it for today's available time.

Well all the smaller tanks are built and the last one really is as close to perfect as I can get it. Unfortunately I got the ATO tank measurements wrong and the whole assembly is 5mm to long to fit within the stands length. I will build the ATO tank over and also increase its height by 100mm. Lots of exterior silicone to trim off still.
