nice stuff. Question though. do you guys always drip acclimate your zoas/palys?
Thanks newman, I usually do not drip acclimate with z's and p's, however the temp of the water was so much colder than mine I need to do it gradually, and I actually had a steady stream rather than the drip drip technique. Also I keep my Mag up at around 1450, so I need to make sure there isn't any weirdness if their mag is much lower than mine.

Okay, got it. So in a nut shell, you and some buddies chipped in and made a group buy. There is a holding tank and every member is waiting for these frags to grow to be fragged and distributed?

How did you guys decide on which tank to hold them in?

How do you guys decide who gets the first polyps and of what zoa/paly? I've never done this so i don't know. Is there like a lottery drawing?

Seems cool if this is correct but kind of frustrating at the same time....waiting for new baby polyps and your turn.

good stuff though

There is one deticated tank for the frags to be held,in this case, akabryanhall be our frag grower.

We decided to put the frags in his tank for a few reasons IMO-1(Bryan has a great track record with grow outs. 2)He offered to do the buy and grow them for us,and with us knowing he is a respected reefkeeper, non of us had any issue,or thats how I see it.

What we are doing,or what Bryan is doing,is we are growing out all of the frags to 7 polyps. So each variation of zoa/paly will have 7 polyps(maybe more)and it will then be cut.If we do it this way,it will insure a few things.1)The death rate should be very low if any since we cut it all at once. 2)There should be faster growth rates since we are not cutting it every time a new polyp come outs. 3)The corals should/will have better health if they are all fragged at once, and then healed over, then shipped out.

Some will argue that group buys are dangerous, which I dont see how they are,but oh well, each to their own!

ahhh i see. I didn't even think of growing it out to a certain number of polyps. I just assumed once one pops out somebody is going to want it.
It's a gamble but I see you guys have stuff worked out. What would be even better if you guys were all local to each other, that way you guys can all enjoy the paly/zoas during the process. gl

Couldn't have said it better Austin! Actually I started doing these as a social thing that would help me better afford this hobby. I was surprised at how many people were interested in doing this. You can check out other buys we have done at afacorals.org.

I usually stick to locals, but this buy is an exception. I think another reason we grow them out before fragging is that sending each polyp as it becomes available is prohibitively expensive.

Just saw that group buy site. Pretty cool book keeping. Glanced over a few things and you guys are pretty successful. Stuff is growing and getting fragged. I saw 2 "dead" updates. It sucks for the coral to die but the "dead" update is pretty funny

Lol the dead parts are inevitable unfortunately. There will always be casualties.
Here is an update, everything is open and my main concern, teh black hornets, are doing great!!

well the good thing about a group buy even tho its a long process if something does die or not make it your not out all that $$ or if yours just does after you got the frag from the grower usually the guys in the group buy will give you the next available polyp (this is depending on the people in the group buy).

That is something that makes this less risky
