I don't really have a preference. I actually used Fritz Turbostart to cycle my rock initially when it was cooking for all those months in the garage. I have also added the Dr Tims, Microbacter 7 and Sachem Stability at different times. I like to think I'm adding some diversity by using different brands over time but who knows, it might all be the same. I did just order some of that PNS Substrate Sauce live starter bacteria as well. That seems to be new and different with some positive reviews but again, who knows. Since I'm having trouble figuring out the source of my problem I think having a wide variety of possible solutions is good. Or not and I'm making it worse, lol.
I can't speak to the PNS Substrate Sauce but I liked their PNS ProBio. I can't swear that it did anything positive but it felt like it did. If nothing else it has a fairly impressive stench.

At this point I'm willing to try any old half baked idea that might work so why not some Purple Sulfur bacteria or whatever it is? I took out the four TBS rocks just to try and eliminate that as a source of ammonia. So far today I did another water change and there's no improvement on the ammonia badge. I'm wondering if there might have been something in the 9 pounds of TBS live sand that I also added. I can't imagine what in there could be dying off and causing a continuous mild ammonia spike that never gets worse or better but who knows. You'd think that by now with the number of water changes and the amounts of bacteria that have been added that I'd be making some headway but the ammonia badge keeps staying green and the ammonia tests keep coming up as higher than zero. The ammonia test kit does read new water as ammonia free so I don't have any reason to think it isn't working. Maybe I need to find a different ammonia test kit to triple check the results but that seems like a waste since I can get a zero result on new water. I really was hoping the water changes and bacteria would just take care of the problem. I'm beyond annoyed at this point.

Finally I’ve made some headway with the ammonia alert issue.
IMG_4796.jpeg

Not perfect but the best it’s been in a while. I’m so tired of doing water changes.

I did have some of this arrive today so I’ll be adding it as well. Just need to figure out the correct amount. The print on the bottle could not be smaller and my vision isn’t what it used to be for tiny print, lol.

Got a couple of these as well.
image.jpg

My scape is a little light on rock so I’m hoping a pair of these in the fuge area will help to combat any future nutrient spikes I may cause.

I keep an OptiVisor handy for just such occasions...

After many false starts and setbacks I have finally cleared out the Lagoon 50. The misbar clown is downstairs in the garage 20g long and the Tomini Tang has migrated to the new tank. It seems to be settling in without freaking out. It does not like the phone at all so it's hard to get up close pictures.

I waited until after 8pm so I could do the transfer after the other fish were powered down for the night. Turning out the room lights now and hoping to find 5 hungry happy fish in the morning.

So far so good today. Everyone seems to be getting along. The Filefish and the Lubbock’s Wrasse both lived with the Tang before so they were pretty chill about its sudden arrival. The blue damsel is actively avoiding the Tang but I’m sure that won’t last long. The yellow wrasse came out this morning, took a look at its much larger new tank mate and said Nope, not going to deal with that, and back into the sand it went. Haven’t seen it again all day. I’m sure it will be out again in a day or two, it’s never shown signs of being intimidated but any of the other new additions and it’s by far the smallest fish in the tank.

Does this look like a juvenile Gorilla Crab.

If this video (it's actually a Live Picture from my iPhone) doesn’t work somebody please let me know. On my iPhone it doesn’t work but I think those with a different phone or computer can see it?

Edit...I can see the 1 second video on my pc laptop but not on any Mac equipment. Kinda frustrating that not all formats work.

Here’s the non live pic cropped to show the crab.

See the pic but not the video. I am no help with the ID sorry.

Think the only way to post videos still is to creating a YouTube, then posting the link here. Could be wrong but think the only way.

I don’t believe I’ve ever posted too much about my garage tank. That’s currently where the corals I’m trying to hang on to from the lagoon 50 are residing along with the mis-bar clownfish, a peppermint shrimp that is a champion aiptasia eater and all of the snails I could find when I cleared out the fish from the lagoon.

There are 4 types of zoas:
Pink Zippers
Goblins on Fire
Vivid Rainbows
Rastas
There is also a main colony and a frag of a purple finger leather, a purple bottle brush gorgonian that’s had algae I just can’t get rid of on it since forever and a big colony of pulsing Xenia that I already got rid of once but one little polyp was left in the lagoon and next thing you know, a whole big colony again. It’s good for sucking up nutrients so I’ll keep it around I guess.

The tank itself is an Aqueon 20g long with a Tenecor diy AIO peninsula insert. That kit also came with a lexan tank lid with vent slats. The Tenecor AIO kits work very well. I actually had a hand in designing it, not that the design is necessarily new or innovative, but it was basically my idea for them to start making them and at one point when they first went up on their website they used my crude freehand drawing of what it was supposed to look like on their product page. Kinda silly and the drawing was fairly quickly replaced with a more realistic rendering of what the kit looks like.

The return pump is the generic stock 476 gph pump that originally came with the lagoon 50. It’s way too big for the 20g tank and I have the flow turned down with a loc-line valve that came with AIO kit on the return nozzle. I need to remove that pump for something much smaller, it takes up way too much room in the AIO chamber.

I’m using an IM Helios heater and controller. It gets in the 30’s in the garage during the winter so I had to have a good heater. I still have to supplement with a second cheap heater during the winter.

The wavemaker is an IM wavelink I had laying around. I have one of each and this one is the smaller one. I have it set to pulse and create a little wave.

The light is a Radion XR15 gen 4 that is left over from the lagoon 50.

The skimmer is an IOAOI model that they were offering free trials on recently so I took them up on it. I still owe them a review so I need to get on that. It seems to work well but there isn’t much of a bioload so results are still inconclusive. It does make skimmate but it’s light and I’m still trying to dial in the position of the water intake (you twist the whole cup section to do this) to get consistent skimming. So far I keep having to fiddle with it. It’s well made and I’m sure I’ll eventually get it completely dialed in.

Here’s some pics.

The IM Lagoon 50 is officially fish free, snail and crab free (mostly) and now anemone free. Took the last two RBTA’s to the LFS today.

Used the rest of my store credit on a second yellow wrasse and on a pair of small Royal Grammas.
IMG_4829.jpeg

The Grammas will go into this divided acclimation box to get used to each other. As long as they’re not huffing and puffing at each other after about a week or so I’ll turn them loose together in the box and monitor closely. If that goes ok then they’ll go free. If it isn’t working out I can put one down in the garage with the clown.

The yellow wrasses and the Lubbock’s wrasses all met and it was peaceful. The yellows kinda swam around each other for a couple of minutes and then the new one buried itself and I don’t expect to see it for a while. They are both the same size so it’s going to be a challenge to try and tell them apart.

The Grammas are in the acclimation box with two little caves I made for them out of rubble. I’m just going to let them chill next to each other for a while.

Nice pick ups. I never knew More than 1 royal gramma can be housed together.
Glad things are progressing smoothly.

I read a few things recently that suggested more than one can be housed together if purchased small and added at the same time. We’ll see. I have a plan if it’s not working out.

I just can’t seem to catch a break. The Tang looks absolutely terrible today. It’s been faded in its colors for a while which I had chalked up to stress in the old tank. The water in that tank was neglected. It had been looking and acting fine since I moved it over to the new tank but today it’s looking really ragged, especially its tail. I have not been able to get a good picture but here’s some where the tail is in pretty good view.
IMG_4842.jpeg

IMG_4841.jpeg

It’s not eating today and looks to be breathing faster than normal.
Everything else in the tank looks fine.

This was fast.
IMG_4843.jpeg

Yesterday this fish was swimming and eating. I can’t say that I really looked at it closely but on the surface everything appeared to be fine in the tank. No other inhabitants are showing signs of stress or disease.

Following along! Sorry to hear about all your troubles and I hope things start to turn around. Losing fish and not knowing why is always frustrating.
Thank you for checking out my build and following along. Appreciate the support. Stuff happens and it is frustrating not knowing what to do. It'll all work itself out one way or another and I'll do everything I can to help the remaining fish. Trying to keep em all fed and fat to keep the immune systems strong.

Made a lot of progress over the weekend and today getting the Apex moved over to the new tank. I hooked up both of the Neptune Skys and I gotta say I’m loving the blanket like coverage that two of them are providing. I’ve only got them maxing out at 7% right now. No corals except the Gorgonian but no shadowing at all.
