Bro. Why on earth are you jumping into freshwater head first when you don’t even have a handle on your reef tank yet? Tell your parents to get you on some ADHD meds or something. You need to CALM DOWN and do one thing at a time man.

Last week you were new to reefing and having ALL sorts of problems in another thread. And now you’re telling me you were running a freshwater tank at age 4 and started reefing at age 11.

so I ordered stratum yesterday(it was same day) and got some plants and guppies today(maybe gonna add a betta and shrimp in the future. but, here are my questions:
1: I just got some elodea Nutella(hehehehehe, nuttallii) at my lfs, AND I HAVE IDEA
Could I cut it up and use it as a carpet plant? will the little trimming be able to regrow? or not?
hope u can help!

2: When should I dose co2 into my 10 gallon tank? once a day? 3 times a week? blah... when and how?
really hope u can help
and do I need Fert? or does fishy poop work well enough?

3: AAAAAAAAHHHHH stratum blew up, my tank is muddy, not that muddy, I am running my sponge filter rn and its doing something, should I just keep that running?

4: can I make a carpet with duckweed?

thanks,
stewy
Are you sure its not tannins? Do you have any driftwood or did you just break up your stratum?

ROFLROFL.... i'll try to help, as i have 2 high tech freshwater tanks, and several sakura shrimp tanks.

No Elodea does not like growing sideways.
Infact no plant does, and always grows up.
To get a carpet, with plants like baby tears for example, you need to "mow the lawn" so to speak, so it grows sideways and not up.
Carpet plants like baby tears is ultra high maintance.... so unless your willing to keep up with it, its more work then its worth.

How are you dosing CO2? Liquid CO2 is mostly snake oil.
High Tech Planted tanks do it using either a diffuser/atomizer/reactor.
They inject it from direct CO2, using a regulator.
All other forms of CO2 dosing is snake oil.
You either inject it or you don't.
And depending on what plants you have, you may need to dose ferts, which is typically potassium phosphate, or magnesium nitrate. I dose both on my high tech tanks.

Explain? What substrate did you use? Fluval Stratum shouldn't go muddy, its ball like, unless you just poured water directly on it and not onto a plate and allowed it to diffuse properly, which means.....
OH BOY... check your ammonia NOW!

Do not ever get duckweed.
You know Xenia in salt water? Yeah, that is duckweed.
Once it grows on the top cuz its a floater, it will cover EVERYTHING, making hell for you.
Sure you can scoup it out since they are floaters, but then they do such a good job pulling excess nutriants like chaeto, that if you pull too much, your tank will crash because you just offset equalibirum.

OKAY
Not true in any way, been reefing since February, tank is great, I’m estimating 10 years, probably more or less around 9-8, but change what u wrote and yes…
And my freshwater, I mean a little tank with a betta, REAL HOBBYIST FRESHWATER, around 3-5 weeks, but I’ve done a fair share of research, mainly watching fish for thought and Serpa design and others like them…

Ok, I meant a carpet as in upright, no dosing, that’s what’s I’m asking, could I diy dose? If so how? And how much? Per what?
Ummm, I was just being paranoid for the substrate, it was a little wittle but cloudy, awwwww I like (duck)weed tho(ha, see what I did there?). I ordered some fluval flouram so…

REAL HOBBYIST FRESHWATER
lol Betta....

Thats my UNS... you see no carpet, because its too high maintance....
You can see the CO2 bottle on the right. I atomize CO2 in that tank.
Substrate is ADA Amazonia Aquasoil.

And I lost the war against the Bolbitus.... sigh.... grows slow they said.... wont take over the tank they said....
Why is it called a FERN!?!?!?

Typically all those pretty tanks with carpets are dry started.
They grow the baby tears or what in a moist tank, and then once its started to spread sideways because without water they can't climb up due to gravity and no boyancy, they grow sideways and carpet.

As for dosing... what plants do you have?
You really shouldn't need to dose anything because you will get a algae bloom on a cosmic scale if not done correctly.

If you want to play with CO2 injection.... this guy is a great way... you mix baking soda + citric acid in that container, and it produces CO2 Gas.

Its not very cost efficient if you have a CO2 fill station near, but for a small tank, its more then enough at about 1-2 bubbles per second. It has a solinoid so you can put it on a timer and have it come on when the lights are on so you don't overgas your tank.

You will need a drop checker to make sure you don't overgas the tank. Over gassing the tank = BAD..

I would start with CO2 injection. Play with it, learn how it works.
It makes Planted tanks a heck of a lot easier with algae control when your doing proper CO2 injection.

For anyone not familiar with OP, look through the post history. Blue tang in a 10 gallon, cutting a tank to make it longer (?? Yeah you read that right), throwing a temper tantrum when called out, and been keeping fish for 10 years (making OP 3 or 4 when he kept tanks? Yeah okay. Troll if you ask me since they never want to accept any help anyone offers.

I don’t think he is a troll. I think he is a poster child for his very unfortunate generation. It’s dumbfounding.

EXACTLY
What do u mean cut a tank? A tang in a 10 gallon? That’s just animal abuse, I wanna be a marine biologist, not an abuser, temper tantrums when I get called out? U mean sbb sales? We r all friends there, right @robanister? We learn, we talk, we laugh…
I’m 15 so ye, around 10 years
I’m not a troll, just cuz u see all this does not mean I actually believe in it…
Where do u see cutting a tank or the tang though???
And the temper tantrums, I bet u have those too a lot…. Leave me be with my very high adhd(I TAKE MEDS!!!) and rmbr, the Internet is anynoumous, I can say things without people knowing who I am, - I’m joking, I would never do that, I’m too nice of a person, sorry if it seemed like I’m trolling, I’m not trying to, with me, don’t look through my post history or whatever, I just have to confront me with it…
Sorry, and have a nice(night?)

And for the temper tantrum, I don’t have those, just cuz it’s caps doesn’t MEAN IM MAD OR ANGRY, I’m just emphasizing things, making things pop out of the image, I’m an artist, my “work” is to make things pop out, so when I do that, it’s cuz of that, and I like receiving criticism, when I go through a breakup, friendship or relationship, I will ask what I did wrong… then I will improve upon that, I am constitaly coming to this site seeking help(thanks everyone) and seeking a feeling of home, cuz here, I can speak to people who actually enjoy the things I like to do,WE HAD A WHOLE CONVERSATION ABOUT CAMERAS AT ONE POINT ON ANOTHER THREAD!!!!!. Nobody at my school wants to do that, or with corals or sand, here, I feel like I am talking to people who appreciate (not really, the appreciation comes from the annoyance) of my presence and how I contribute, if that bothers u, then idk anymore man…. Maybe try and work around it? Find a way to feel comfortable in that setting? Not trying to be mean or anything, but please, why would people troll on a site about keeping fish and reefs? What are they supposed to say? Besides your tank sucks and you kill everything u keep?(not true, just example). Idk how to end this, so thanks for listening and understanding?
Ps, I’m not one of those crappy gen z’s who go around singing “RIZZLER, GYATT, OHIO, SKIBIDI”. I don’t have social media, im always outdoors, or working on things for me to improve, or ranting on my adhd obsession rants, so… I’m also called the 80’s kid on my block cuz I’m always outside!
