Nope, that chamber is going to pointless now except if I ever need to use the emergency drain

I did turn on my protein skimmer last night to play around with it. It was producing tons of micro bubbles which I discovered through research is normal when new. Needs to be broken in.

Well… My ATO decided to throw roughly 10 gallons of RODI into the tank over night. I assume it was due to the micro bubbles interfering with the Osmolator 3 sensor. I turned off the ATO while the protein skimmer goes through its initial phase.

After the incident my salinity level plummeted which I resolved by removing 10 gallons of water and adding salt directly to the tank u til at 1.026. Unfortunately the incident led to the death of one of the clownfish ☹️

I plan on adding a float valve as redundancy to prevent that from happening again.
Yeah protein skimmers do need time to break in.

Ugh sorry to hear about the ATO and fish. I always felt that it was a step backwards for the Osmolator 3 to remove the float valve.

I agree regarding a step back. When I was getting my parts for this build, I thought they had discontinued the previous version as I couldn’t find it anywhere. In hindsight; I wish I waited for one to pop up for sale.

It’s sad, the remaining clown is hanging out with itself in the reflection

Readings from Apex

IMG_4550.png

Per Neptune - ORP can take up to 2 weeks to be accurate.

pH is lower than I’d like based on my research. There is likely some organic breakdown from algae breakdown on the live rock as well as feeding the tank inhabitant. I’m hoping the pH will continue to rise over the coming weeks.

Temp holding pretty stable.

I also took kH reading of 7.1 using the Red Sea kit. Tropic Marin Pro Reef salt claims to exhibit a kH around 7, so that is accurate.

Have not taken Mg or Ca yet as I don’t have any coral to rely on it.

I will be taking Ammonia in a few days to confirm the live rock pushed my through the cycle quickly. I have been dosing Seachem Safe to detoxify any free Ammonia or Nitrite in the meantime.

Orp and pH have seen some improvement today

I’m curious if anyone knows what these little critters are? They seem to have appendages that sway with the flow:

From my searches, looks like could be harmless Medusa Hydroids

ORP still trending up.

pH has hit 7.8 for the past few nights. It’s odd it’s rising and falling without any photosynthesis happening in the tank. I’ve kept the lights off since the rock has went in.

This morning I noticed tons of pods on the glass which is a welcoming sign.

In roughly 2 weeks I’ll be planning on adding my next fish. Right now the next one in the running is a Longnose Hawkfish.

Currently the only live inhabitants beyond Hydras and pods is two clownfish.

Long nose hawk fish are cool and IME hardy. I have had issues adding invertebrates after they are established. They’ll definitely eat a cleaner shrimp if you add after. Just a consideration. Enjoying following your build.

Oh really? That’s good to know. Maybe I’ll hold off then. I am planning on getting a few shrimp for Aptasia mitigation and cleaning.

Possible next fish suggestions?

My wife really likes the Royal Gramma - seem to be quite hardy from what I’ve read.

I’ve personally always had good luck with Royal grammas being peaceful and pretty plan to add one to my system eventually. Mine have always fiercely guarded their cave, but weren’t menaces to the whole tank. I have heard of other people having dissimilar experiences, but it has not been my experience.

I have a lyretail anthias in QT right now and it’s been a really nice fish with good color and always out, can even get 2-3 of them as female and let one turn into a male. A good bright colored dither fish. They just need to be fed at least 2x a day is the only caveat with them. Mine is eating pellets and mysis like a pig.

My wife and I would get one, but I don't want to overcrowd my tank. However, these are great fish to have!

So after going to a few LFS, we decided to go with a Purple Firefish. I watched it for about 20 min in the store before pulling the trigger

It’s been eating since day 1 in my tank and has recently decided it’s not so scary to be out when I turn on the lights lol

Also added two new fish the past week. Both eating and seem quite active.

Yellow Coris Wrasse

Tennenti Tang - If and when it outgrows the tank, I’ll pass it onto a local hobbyist or shop

Refugium light and power head put in. Also have some pods on the way to seed the refugium macro algae (Chato). The light will be on a timer once I get the algae in.

Very nice! I was saving up for the same tank to upgrade and was shooting to purchase it on Black Friday this year and then my daughter got engaged. My wife helped me get up from the floor after she told me what our financial responsibility would be for the wedding. I realized my upgrade funds were now part of my daughter’s wedding wedding fund. Black Friday of 2025 it will be then!

I totally understand. It took me almost 2 years to plan this out and get all the gear. My strategy was to spread the cost out over that time frame instead of buying it all at once.
