Someone gave me this FREE mantis shrimp he said he got as a hitchhiker on some live rock. Can you ID the specific type for me, so I know how big he will get / how much substrate to put down for it?

What are you planning on having in that aquarium?

A mantis shrimp.

The long story here is, I bought that as a quarantine tank for a hermit crab that I thought was a cleaner crew crab but really he was a red spotted, so I had him isolated in that 20gallon high. Returned the crab. Someone gave me that mantis for FREE.

I dont want him in my 72 gallon main tank as I'm pretty sure he will murder everything I try to add later if he gets big. So. This is now a dedicated species tank.

I have these small critters stinging my acros at night. They are tiny fleshy bits with a filamentous tentacle that retracts when the lights are on. I have been noticing that my acropora have bleached spots on them. Some of these acros are not doing well and have died back in the effected area.

I have been trying to figure out how this is happening. I have been looking on at night with an LED flashlight, and found these guys. The only one I could get a picture of is in my refugium. I can't focus on them in the display tank with my cell phone. They are increasing in number! Please help me with this one!

Definitely digitate hydroids. I just looked them up. Thanks for the ID.
Now the big question.... How do I get rid of them? They are killing my corals.

Very difficult! Manual removal via tweezers or putting a drop of Superglue Gel on them. They feed from the water column so keeping food down to a minimum helps. Very tenacious little buggers.

I was gonna say star polyps, but unsure....kind of long wavy strands. And how is it that you didn't notice it? This looks pretty big and has a beautiful green.
