I've used HOB's in the past with great success - *on SMALL TANKS* & I think they are fine for tanks up to about those narrow 55's so many people seem to have an affinity for! Personally, I wouldn't go more than a 40 gal. - which is what my quarantine tank is now! I just bought a Seachem / SICCE Tidal 55 for that purpose & I'm impressed with it's features. I also bought a "GREEN KILLING MACHINE" - COOSPIDER - REPTA SUBMERSIBLE U V AQUARIUM FILTER - AMPHIBIOUS U V LAMP ; EPA EST. NO. 96998-CHN-1 ; 6 - 10 W ; CR-SUVC6W ; IP68 /50 ~ 60Hz. So everything I get in WILL go into the QT tank for the usual prescribed period & the U V will handle any possible parasites, etc. ! I'm doing my very best to build my new 9 tank - centrally filtered system thinking of everything I possibly can plan for ahead of time! I'm working hard to build with any possible / potential issues that I read about in mind, trying to guard against anything going wrong & using techniques others don't even think about! I LOVE DIY! I am looking to save money wherever I can & this build is turning out to be far more expensive than I ever dreamed it would be. I'm 5 months in & only now about to set up my QT tank & get my LIQUGEN RO/DI 6 stage system set up!

I have a Tidal 55 I also have a Tidal 35 for my QT. The Tidal 55 runs my 30g. I also have a HOB skimmer for that tank but I love the Tidal filters. They are easy to use and robust enough to take the salt. I can add whatever media I want to the chamber. I could run a 2nd one and make a Fuge if I wanted. I have never used other HOBs other than Tidal but I would recommend the Tidals for anyone who wants a HOB.

I use a Tidal 110 on my 40 breeder. I never knew you could use another one for a refugium. Do you just not put anything in it? For that matter what are you supposed to put in there? Pods? I have a bunch of Pom Pom Gracillaria. Won’t all that roll out the front?
