Hi all,

Just added a pre quarantined Fox Face to my tank. He was turning greyish on the way home and same while I acclimated (drip). He went straight to the bottom of the tank behind some rocks on the floor. Now I can't seem to find him... do I need to worry? Only other fish in the tank are two clowns that are doing great. 135gallon, water parameters look good.

Foxfaces turn Grey when stressed or lights out. I wouldn't worry yet. Did you do the qt or someone else?

My LFS did, they offer a QT service for extra. Never had any issues, all healthy fish. He looked healthy and I watched him eat in the QT room before taking him home.

Colouring down is normal for foxfaces. I used to work at a fish store and it took them about a week to colour up in a new environment, and as Dburr mentioned, they also colour down at night.

I just got my first foxface last week and he was super mottled in the bag. I thought he was dead. I had no idea they could change colors like that,. Acclimated him and he hid for a couple hours and now 4 days later he is out and about. Pretty scary at first. Give him some tome and I’ll bet he will come around.

Do I need to worry that I can't seem to find him? Would like to know hes ok...
I think taking apart rock structure to try and find him would only stress him out more. Most wild-caught fish will almost exclusively hide for the first day or two, and sometimes it takes longer for them to come around. Just try to look through the rockwork as much as you can if you want to try and find him.

this pigmentation is often displayed by rabbitfish in general and can be stress or a sign of distress

They do that and can blend in very well with rock.

I'm sure he's just settling in.

Mine does it if another fish swims by to fast . Foxface are very skittish fish. IDK how mine hasn’t died from having to many panic attacks. Lol.

Wait till you see them sleeping.

They also like to blow bubbles at the water surface. And their yellow color changes throughout the day. Sometimes lighter, sometimes brighter.

Ok, I know everyone was up all night worrying about Nick. I saw him pop out last night when the lights went down, full color and all. Can't tell if he is eating though, as the nori kinda disappears over time anyway.
