Is there any interest in this club for doing a group order for DIY LED components? I would be happy to help those of you assemble them who are not too up to speed on the electrical circuits and soldering. While I would do a search for the best/cheapest LEDs for group orders, some of the best heat sinks which could be stand-alone in-hood or hanging fixtures are sold at Rapid LED. Ultimately I plan to make a fixture for a 20L so I can make either an active or frag tank again.

This is on the slow-burner for me -- I don't have the funds readily available to drop $150 on building all the components immediately. And I can get better bulk orders of LEDs given two or three months.

So please post of PM if you are interested in this being some sort of group project.

Well crap. I just placed an order with rapid led. Still got to finalize a few things. Let me know if you want to tack something on to my order.

I love their new heat sinks. The way they are made with slots for the splash guard and hanging kit. I wish I didn't have mine already.

Heh. Sorry. Not ready to drop the cash on this for at least two months. I would get their heat sinks, though, over all others I've seen. And pay the extra for pre-tapping them for me.

No worries. I thought you might be ready for just the heat sinks.

I might take you up on uour offer once I get everything together. I am pretty confident wiring the LEDs but would like some suggestions on the best way to run all my wiring to the fixture. Possibly a stand alone box to contain all AC or something.

I'd like to keep posted on it also. Maybe by then, I will be back to work and able to get in on it. I would like to convert the frag tanks, and maybe my display over to LED's. These three 250w halides are HOT and expensive to replace and run.

On the tapping of holes....why not do it yourself? Is it a lot of holes, or just cheap to have them do it? With the right tap, you can tap a hole as quick as you could drill it...faster, really.

I'll keep everybody posted and start doing some research on group buys for certain components.

Because I broke three taps trying to do the little one on my tank before I got all the holes drilled. And the guy who runs RapidLED has a drill press and only marks up his 6" x 20" heat sinks by $13 to drill and tap them.
:)

What size taps were they? I don't mind tapping larger things, but under 1/4" gets into crappy times...especially the smaller they go.

The taps are for 4-40 screws. I misread the site and you can get one that has a variety of errors for $13 more. It's $33 more for a perfectly tapped and drilled 6"x20" heat sink.
