dinos will almost look like snot with bubbles mixed in. it gets really long and stringy. I would leave all lights off for at least 3 days while dosing peroxide

Sounds more like diatoms than dinos. Are you using RO water? What are your tanks paramaters?

If you are using RO water. what is your TDS reading. Excessive silicates coming from tap water could be fueling your diatoms

I use RO/DI water and my TDS is 0. Parameters are:
NO3: < 5ppm (API)
PO4: 0 (Salifert)
Cal: 440 (API)
Alk: 8.7 (Salifert)
pH: 8.1 - 8.4 (probe)
salinity: 1.024

Thanks for the help (and don't mean to crash this thread with my diatoms issue).

Something has to be fueling it if it is diatoms. Usually it is from silcates. With your TDS at 0 it is not coming from there. You could try testing for silcates. SAilfert has a good test. What kind of sand did you use. just a long shot

4 months is still kind of young and could be a part of a cycle still honestly... Hmmm inwould say reduce the lighting schedule and reduce the feedings in the tank... Also don't change the water let them burn out on there own it's the only sure fire way ime. You could look into diatom filters if ya wanted it wouldn't hurt... I don't know what ro unit your using but I have a Kent hi-s which is a high silicate remover I bought a el cheapo membrane and exp these problems I went back to a Kent hi-s membrane and the problem subsided... I would say it's your water honestly if I had to guess... Lots of things don't show up on tds meters like po4 and silicates might be another one.... I have tested a 0 tds water and found .03 po4 fwiw... Hth

Wow thats a high po4 reading for your ro water. Guess its time to quit relying on my tds meter and double check my RO water again

i use a BRS RO/DI to make my water. I'm also running a BB system. Maybe I'll try to reduce my lighting schedule. Or should i just not run my halides? I run my T5s for 10 hours and my halides for 6 hours. My radiums are only 4 months old and T5s about a month.

You could try and cut the halides or better yet cut the t5s and just run the radiums for like 4 hrs a day...

@bob "turbo" I am seeing in numerous places people running gfo on there mixing stations sounds crazy but I'm all for it...
I havent done it yet but most likely will set up a reactor with gfo running on a continues loop so my water is really 0tds and 0 po4 before adding to the display....

i quit dosing everything besides the major 3 cal, alk, mag while i dosing the h2o2... yeah willie if your dosing vodka right now your just fueling them buddy....sorry

I stopped the vodka but I'm using carbon(the black charcoal like stuff from BRS LOL)for the smell....could it be reducing the effect of the H202 ?

If i can find the time, i will check my RO outout. My TDS is at 0 but havent checked the output just the tank. Maybe this will explain my never ending phosphate issue. I might go the GFO route also. I started a thread in the chemistry forum asking if anybody else is testing their RO output for phosphate. No replies yet

I jusr read in another post that someone had to recalibrate their TDS meter every so often because when it read 1 it was actually reading 10

I tried calibrating my tds and it made it all worse lol... I use a hand held tds meter now and get like 2 or 3 depending on how long my ro has been running... Any trace of po4 won't show up on tds it's a whole separate thing iirc.

Hi I've been vodka dosing for like 2 months I have about 70 gal twv I dose .3 ml a day and add bacteria( special blend) 1 time every 2 weeks with wc my corals mostly sps look great but I have battled green and brown hair alage for months my tds is 0 I run a lot more then recommended dose for phosban in a reactor my kits show 0 nitrates 0 phosphates which I know is not true cause I'm cleaning my glass every other day ! Anyway I'm kinda desperate I'm doing all the right things and the alage just won't go away has anyone here had any success with the h2o2 for hair alage ? Also I used microbactor in past noticed no difference when using it side by side with vodka

I used to spot treat algae with H2O2 in my planted tank all the time. It was a pretty proven method for killing a lot of different types of algae. There was also a tank dosing method but the dose was quite a bit stronger for freshwater - 2ml per gallon.

Here's an interesting scientfic paper on H2O2 toxicity to algae and vascular plants.

You need to change your phosban out more often. Depending on the amount of phosphates in your system it may take many months to get it low. Might also check the DI resins make sure they aren't exhausted. 0 tds doesn't necessarily mean you arent getting phosphates in your RO.
