not sure. movement is unusual. got a pic of the tank area where that stuff is?

This was from a glass scraping, blew everything off last night and ran a hang on UV in my 20 Cube. Been Dosing microbacter for the last 2 days, I checked this morning before the lights came on(turned lights down) and they hadn't come back yet. I'll see if I can get a picture if they come back tonight.

I'm leaning toward a form of small cell amphidinium. The combo of UV and low lights ought to continue to be helpful.

Dinoflagellate ID help, please. (Don't trust my eyes)
*picture and video below

Background only if of interest:
- Bottomed out phosphates and got dino outbreak (over 1 year ago, I think)
- Just aggressive manual removal and dosing phosphate got me passed it
- Hadn't seen any dinos for many months (maybe close to a year)
- Started dosing Coral Aminos twice per week and started seeing some dino "strands" hanging off corals (so stopped with the aminos)
*not bad right now but want to be prepared with a plan

I apologize in advance for this but noticed that, every so often, a second type seems to walk/scurry through also:

right. you have 90+% ostreopsis and a few amphidinium. Deal with the ostreopsis, and don't worry too much about the amphidinium for now.

Looks like large cell amphidinium to me, if I have to guess. I think running carbon is a good idea regardless.
Two months later and I’m still fighting. But it seems like the large cell amphidinium is being supplanted by these much smaller critters. I assume this is small cell amphidinum but they are so much smaller I wanted to confirm. They look like 10x smaller than the larger ones. See video attached.

So it looks like my most recent outbreak has settled, certainly don't think they've gone completely just subsided lol.
I've had the lights on around 10% for 3 weeks or so, sandbed is much clearer but still see some evidence of it here and there.

My levels are all out of whack though and I think I need to do a waterchange to try and alleviate some of the trouble but worried that things will go to poop again immediately after.
Any thoughts what I can do here instead or if a WC will have to do?

Temp 24.6
pH - 8.1
Nitrate - 47 (Ouch) - Could possibly chuck a heap of carbon to try and reduce this ?
Phosphate - 0.205 (Ouch - Need to empty out the existing rowaphos in the media reactor and chuck some new stuff in).
Salinity - 1.027 (Ouch)
Alk - 8
Calcium - 460 (new testing through salifert, so this could potentially not be THAT bad, but possibly is - have turned down the calcium dosing)
Magnesium - 1500 ish, (New testing through salifert, could potentially not be THAT bad, but possibly is - have turned down the magnesium dosing).

Is it as bad as I think?

Can I get a ID on Dinos. I have been battling for a while and finally got a microscope to confirm. I think the Dinos are on the decline, but I have a crazy amount of Cyano right now and trying to battle that too. Thanks for the help
what microscope are you using? Great pics

Would love to see if someone could replicate my results. High doses of iron and a little phyto finally got me out of a year long battle.
In the past when I dosed iron my dinos exploded. In fact on 3 separate occasions I had no dino issues until I dosed iron. Twice from chaetogro and one from diluted iron tablets.

Have you tried what worked for me? 2 day blackout, manual removal, followed by phyto and Microbacter dosing.

Appreciate the response.
I ended up just doing the waterchange (approx 17%) and the tank has continued without any ill effects thus far, thankfully.

I'll potentially look to do another this weekend (it'll have been 2 weeks by then) as I need to try and get these nitrates back under control as they're still around 45-46. Phosphate is still up but that's an easy fix with rowaphos.

I've been battling with dinoflagellates in my reef, and a fellow reefer with it in his coral qt. Never identified the species, but was probably the same as I think he got it from me. A few weeks ago we both added 10x gold ring cowries, and now both our dinos seems to be gone. Anecdotal, and too many other variables to consider, but might be an avenue exploring further?

Low/no toxin dinos are grazed by herbivores like snails and pods. But toxic dinos just kill the herbivores.
