DAILY QUESTION: What has been the biggest setback you've experienced in growing corals? How did you bounce back?

Today’s question: my greatest challenge was pulsing Xenia’s. For some reason my wife really wanted them, but they just would not thrive. I finally convinced my wife she really didn’t want them that much and got her a really nice Favia instead.

DAILY QUESTION: What has been the biggest setback you've experienced in growing corals? How did you bounce back?

Aiptasia was stinging lot of my corals a while back. I tried all of the chemicals to kill them and it always just made them spread even more. I ended up getting a copperband that took care of them for me.

I haven't experienced growing corals yet, but I will very soon. Right from the start, I think my first set back will be questioning myself if I'm doing it right.

Biggest setback has probably been from trying to do too many different things at once. Favia, micromussa, chalice... all have about the same care requirements on the surface, but in practice can be quite different.
Sticking with one type and going slowly has helped hugely.

Biggest setback? I've had a couple - Dinos, Aiptasia, GHA from rusty magnets, Monti Eating Nudibranches, alkalinity spikes, phosphates dropping out, RTN/STN...

Reversing bleaching/STN on my SPS, and now seeing noticeable growth and color improvement

T5/LED hybrid!

DAILY QUESTION: How do you handle coral fragging in your tank? Are you a frequent fragger? Occasional fragger? Or only when you have to prune?

Like most these days, when my zoa goes from 1 polyp to 2, time to make some money.

DAILY QUESTION: What is your approach to dosing calcium and alkalinity? Do you dose any other elements?

Kalk is enough for now. Magnesium as needed.

DAILY QUESTION: How do you acclimate new corals to your tank?

I float them to temp acclimate for 30 minutes, drip acclimate for 30 minutes. Then soak them in hydrogen peroxide for a bit and put them in.

DAILY QUESTION: What methods do you use to prevent coral pests and diseases?

Hydrogen peroxide dip on entry. Then most start in my nano. Pseudo qt system. It at least catches bubble algae or other obviously pests that I’m pretty sure aren’t already in my main tank.

Growing corals, no major setbacks yet. Just a hard learning curve. I did lose a CBB that was eating well for the first couple months. That was sad. Told my kids, “this is why we don’t name the fish”

DAILY QUESTION: What has been the biggest setback you've experienced in growing corals? How did you bounce back?

My biggest setback so far has been waiting for our 2 tanks to finish cycling so I can start adding some livestock and get our tanks ready for corals. I have been steady doing research everyday to get myself prepared. Every chance I get I am either reading or watching YouTube videos. I am always thinking of a question that I would like to research. I am always checking out better lighting that I hope to get one day. I am always making a plan of action.
