As a new tank owner -- I experienced the common "red slim" outbreak.
After some research -- I decided to try Chemiclean by Boyd Enterprises.
I followed the directions carefully (even setting up a battery power air stone). Also, all carbon and other media must be removed along with a UV filter (if you run one). I only left filter floss in my media baskets.
It has now been about 24 hours and the cyanobacteria is nearly gone. Most find that it takes a full 48 hours to completely eradicate the outbreak.
There has been no apparent stress on the fish or corals in the tank.
Just for reference:
  • My tank is a JBJ45 rimless
  • 3 small cardinals
  • 1 coral beauty
  • 2 clowns
  • 1 royal gramma
  • 1 torch coral
  • 1 hammer coral
  • 3 small frags -- I have no idea what they are -- I just like'em :)
Just wanted to share this experience in hopes others may benefit.

Thanks for sharing. I use chemiclean as well and if you follow the instructions it works very well.

Glad it worked for you!

But it didn’t happen without a pic

Update: All the cyano is gone! Took only 48 hours -- in fact, in 24 hours things look significantly better.
Now the key is to eliminate the need for Chemiclean in the future. Frankly, I never thought I was over feeding. In fact, all the food is eaten within a few minutes. Soooo, it must be something else. So far I have only been doing a 5 gallon water change every two weeks on my 45g JBJ AOI. Perhaps I should do it weekly. I measured Nitrates and phosphates before using the Chemiclean -- test kits didn't show anything significant. --gene

Chemiclean is awesome. I was having a problem with my zoa's 5 or so months ago closing for no apparent reason. After a single go of chemiclean they opened up after 4 days and havent had a closed polyp since.

Did the 20% water change and revamped the media I use (carbon and Purigen). Frankly, things look better than ever. This, too, shall pass :)

For some reason every Spring my tank gets Cyano. If I leave it it will eventually go away on it's own in a month or two, or I can dose Chemiclean and have it gone in a week.

Hi Gary -- I used the powder. For my tank I dissolved 4 level spoonfuls (using the spoon they provided). My tank is a 45 JBJ rimless.

Ok thanks. I think if I use it I'll use the liquid. Right now I'm dosing with Waste-Away. I'm 4 days away from reaching the maximum dose recommended. If I see no improvement by then I'll do a water change and try the Chemiclean.
