Bryopsis Cure: My Battle With Bryopsis Using Fluconazole

Did Fluconazole Kill all of your Bryopsis?

  • Yes

  • No

  • I'm treating my tank with it now.

  • I love Bryopsis and I'm mad that everyone is killing it.

@NCreefguy , just to clarify, you dosed once of 20mg/gal and thats it?
also, do i need to turn off skimmer and carbon?

Correct I dosed just once 20mg/gal. I removed my skimmer cup for the first 4-5 days and have not ran any carbon the entire time. Others though have tried this treatment and not changed anything in their system at all during it and it still killed their Bryopsis.

I have a 46g mix reef. I would really like to know the recommended dose for my system. Also which fluconazole to use?

If you just have the 46g with rocks/sand/equipment and nothing else attached that adds water volume then I would say..... 46gal - 20% = around 36gal x 20mg/gal = 720mg. So 3 capsules would be 600mgs or 4 for 800mgs. Either way would probably be fine.

Finally got my order in the mail today and already dosed both tanks. Took some water parameters prior to dosing as well as photos.

70g with 40g sump/fuge
1800mg dose

Nitrate-0ppm
Phosphates ~0.05 ppm
pH-7.8
Alk-7.0
Calc-400ppm
Salinity-1.026
Temp-80
Turned skimmer off, removed GAC and gfo. Raised alk a little and leaving led/t5's on for duration at normal scheduled times.
I left my chaeto in both the 70g system as well as the biocube 29. Water was cloudy in both tanks for a very short time, 30 minutes give or take.
All fish, corals and inverts show no signs of stress. I also have some sponge in my 70g and a feather duster in my biocube 29.
Looking forward to ridding my tanks of bryopsis!

Be interesting to see if leaving the lights (uv led and or actinic ) has an impact.

Scouting the Web others state the display UV in most full spectrum lights won't effect the medication.

I'm happy to remove carbon, take the skimmer offline for a few days but not sure about changing my lighting schedule. More for sps stability.

Keep us updated [emoji106]

@stevo01 has a bunch of zoas so he could chime in on how they are reacting to the treatment.

Hey guys! Got home today and woooohoooo! Fluconazole is putting the smack down for sure. No change in my zoas and palys or any other coral. I dont have any other algea in this tank as its been either killed by vibrant or out competed by bryopsis.

Just wanted to say this is the real deal and its dying!

I just decided to go with leaving the light schedule as is. I'll definetely do as others and post daily updates and progress of my tanks. Looking forward to joining others with being successful at beating bryopsis and hopefully for the long run. I've beat ich and other diseases/parasites and algae problems in the past but this bryopsis is the worst.

Like I've said, some people changed absolutely nothing in their tanks schedule and their Bryopsis still died during treatment. I would think that at least running carbon would remove too much of the medication but someone didn't remove theirs and they were still successful at beating it. It probably takes a lot less Fluconazole than we realize and once it's in our tanks,it's taking the Bryopsis out.

I can't wait to see everyone's tanks when they are Bryopsis free!! :)
See what we started =) words cant even express how happy i am this stuff is working for everyone. My buddy dosed his last night into a 500+ gallon total system, hopefully demolish everything through all his tanks plus hes running all his equipment except his denitrator.
Hows your tank today?

Someone mentioned that their hair algae was looking a little less healthy. Any update on if the hair algae was affected? I too ordered some last night. Received a shipment confirmation today.

Ill dose my Pico tank. I have some standard gha in it. Used vibrant to get rid of the gha and caused a cyano that went way out of control. Its slowly been getting better. So I think this is an opportunity to use Fluconazole in a pico size tank, on gha, and cyano. I have zoa, paly, mushrooms, walking dendro, as well as fish, inverts. Going with the standard 20mg/gallon dose. Ill do 50mg and see what happens ok?

I apologize if this has been asked and answered already, but I don't have the time to read through the entire thread. Has anyone used fluconazole in a tank with coral banded shrimp or bubble tip anemones? I would like to give fluconazole a try to get rid of my bryposis infestation but don't want to harm either of these two animals.

Thanks,

Bruce
