Awesome! Can't wait to follow these builds!

A couple store displays I did. The first one was an old RedSea tank that never really got off the ground. Scape was sweet, but It had too much light and got too hot. The second was an Marineland tank and results were gold. I can't find a bare rock photo of it.

Hello all,
I did not do anything too fancy, but I like the way it came out. I was looking for a clean open look with good flow through the whole scape leaving a good amount of sand bed and open swimming space for fish, while having enough room for coral. I started the process on the box my 525xl came in to get a rough idea. I marked the rocks with stickers for reference when I was building it in the tank. This was really helpful when replicating. I could have glued some pieces together, but I thought it would make it more difficult to position in the tank. I replicated the design in the tank on the bare bottom, followed by sand and water. Then filled in some bare spots and shifted some more. When scaping I wanted to ensure I could fit my arm behind the rock work to ensure good flow and maintain cleanliness. I want to keep the back wall free of all algae so this was important to me. I want to start a build thread, but saw this and wanted to jump in. I have probably added to many pictures, but I thought seeing the process and how the scape looked from different angles would be interesting to some Reefers out there.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any pictures that I can find, but I’d like to share an idea or two. Back in the 70s I started my first saltwater tank in a brand new all-glass (An innovation at the time! My other 30-gallon freshwater tank still had a stainless steel frame and hood.) 30-gallon aquarium. I placed it caddy corner in my living room and behind it I placed a shadow box. The box was constructed from a 4’ x 8’ piece of wood panelling that I rescued from the sidewalk on trash day in The Bronx, NY.

I cut a roughly semicircular top and bottom and then bent the sides to the shape of the top and bottom. I glued and fastened the bottom and side together so that the opening in the front was rectangular and fitted against the back of the aquarium and filled most of the space behind it in the corner of the room. I painted the interior of the box with a flat black spray paint. I attached a small ledge at the front of the bottom piece so that I could put a shallow layer of aquarium gravel to cover the bottom panel. On top of this I placed some shells, corals, and a dried sea fan (Today, I’d use plastic replicas.)

The layer of gravel lined up with the back of the gravel in the tank and made the 12-inch tank appear to be almost 3-feet deep. The black walls and lid of the box added to the illusion of depth.

I am not a lover of seeing hoses, tubes, powerheads, and such in my tanks. I try my best to hide them with plants, rocks, and natural looking decorations, even letting algae cover some of the equipment to make it fade into the background.

I plan on upgrading to a 125G in the not too distant future. I didn’t plan well on my first 3 setups,lol... luckily this has allowed me to practice and plan more.

An Aussie VLOGER asked me to make him a hardscape with the look and feel of the one I did above so I knocked this up yesterday. The tank is the same tank as previous also, 60x60x55h.

I think a good reefscape is scaled well, it is balanced, it allows for plenty of flow, it has ledges, platforms and levels. It should look great from every viewing angle. It must provide plenty of surface area for coral growth and allow for expansion. It needs to accommodate corals with different light requirements. But most importantly when you see it it has to resemble a beautiful miniature reef that you’ve never actually seen before.

This scape ticks all of the boxes for me and I don’t think I could improve upon it any further. Looking forward to it getting wet and populated.

Rock used was 15kg of Caribsea Life rock cemented together using Aquaforest Stone Fix, love that product. Both of those products actually. They are game changers for reef scapers.

I took progressive shots so you can see how it came together.

Making some progress... Slowly! Would LOVE to get some input on my first aquascape (that I like) right side (1/2) of my tank.
post #8 from thread link for more pics, details, explanations, and to give any constructive input you might offer.

Opinions? I'msetting up a corner pentagon aquarium, mixed reef with a snowflake eel and some slightly aggressive fish. The wood blocks represent the 3" sand depth.

Great looking scapes, guys!! If you want more responses, I suggest starting a thread in the aquascape forum: https://www.reef2reef.com/forums/aquascape-discussion.1028/
That's almost certainly going to get more views and definitely more specific responses.

Or you can post them here: https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/need-help-with-your-aquascape.385531/
